Good afternoon all,
So in the spring, I greased all my seacocks. They are groco bronze with the grease fitting. Actually the first time I’ve ever done that. Anyway, all seems good. The fittings are working fine (they did before as well). I went to use my washdown pump to clean my anchor chain as it was coming up. It was the first time of the season and as typical antifreeze came out however it started sputtering almost like I had air in the system so today I went down, checked all the clamps and worked my way up from the intake fitting up to the pump I blew out the hose from the pump going out of the boat. Everything look good then proceeded to tighten up all the other clamps leading up to the deck. I turned on the pump same situation went back down and checked out the filter and there was a little blob of seaweed in there so I took it out, hooked everything back up and same situation. I chalked it up to a pump that was going bad since it was bought in 2018. Closed everything up figured I’d have a sputtering wash down until I can get home. when I was cleaning the bucket that I put the seaweed in I noticed it was very greasy and in fact it was a blob of grease mixed with seaweed. Now my thinking is is that I got grease into the pump and that it’s messing with the valve so they’re not fully closing. by the way the pump is an SPX flow Johnson 5.2 gallon per minute.
So my first line of attack is, I’m going to put the intake hose into a bucket of hot soapy, water, and pump it into the pump and let it sit for a few minutes and then pump more hot water through the pump hoping to heat things up a little bit and maybe flush it out. Right now I don’t want to take the top off and do any manual labor to it.
Just wanna see if anyone else has experienced something like this and what they might’ve done to solve the issue.
