remote control

if you use an autopilot with a remote controler then its also easy to remove the wheel !! Same kind of crazy stuff as the joystick !

One correction

I did make one mistake with my suggestion.... BEER holder, not cup holder. I think your original idea does have an advantage. It would create a new drinking game. The table is mounted to the wheel. When the capn yells, prepare to come about, everyone takes a sip of their drink and goes to trim sails, etc. The capn spins the wheel to tack and everyone gets another person's drink. Dave

Great idea

And one more thing to look at - the mechanics to turn the rudder-post will be a whole lot simpiler. You just have a rod run down to a pully with a belt or chain that moves the rudder post. Very clean and sinple operation. I like also like the concept of a fixed table mounted above the wheel so you could mount your instruments.

Segway

Get together with the guy who invented the Segway. You two could incorporate your idea. Then the captain would simply move his body in the direction that s/he wanted the boat to go and the rudder would turn accordingly.

This might work

Table on top of wheel, mount to pedestal and staft of wheel with a bearing. Table would be stationary, could have cup holders, instruments, etc. See link.

Might as well just have a "Fly by wire" system

Like they have in fighter jets. Or even better yet, just have a joy stick. Hinckley Picnic boats are all controlled take a look at the video on the link below - way cool ! http://video.thehinckleycompany.com/jetstick/

Put another leg or two on it

Sjack's picture just need a little engineering to make it seaworthy. The leg that carries the table is going to break as soon as the boat heels and somebody really leans on it. You could either add another leg (or two) around the rim or inclose the whole thing and leave only a portion for the captain. Do you really want ANYBODY to be able to grab the wheel and con the boat. I'm thinking that would be bad if it was by accident. With the enclosed idea you have lots of places to hang gear and a big table. Just my 2 cents.

Honeyman

If that was a description of me, then thanks. If it was for me, then it is the best compliment I've ever been given...well...except my ex calling me a genius but I figured she was biased. If it was for me, then here is my acceptance speech "I owe it all to Shinerbock beer. Shiner has been the bright light in my long and narrow tunnel, guiding me to the end. The more Shiner I had in me, the more visionary I became" :)

Maybe your wife thought you were a genius, but

Franklin, I think Honeyman was referring to the post #25 from Old Salt about Fly by wire. I am sure that took a little more effort than a six pack. Rich

Shiner Bock......

Mmmm... Shiner Bock. The beverage of choice when I was sailing the Hill Country lakes near Austin. Can't find it too easily in Virginia. Dave
