I found the remains of a serial #

Can someone tell me how many digits the serial number is suppose to have? Is there letters, numbers, or both. There was a metallic sticker that has started to come off. I can read some numbers and mfg. and things like that. I would like to make a new data plate.

I was told it's the same as for autos, 17...

Twelve digits. First on Hunters are the letters HUN. If built after August 1, 1984 five numbers follow the HUN then one letter then three numbers.For example HUN 45678 B2 89.

David I think he's talking about VINs not HINs.
