...who it was that was looking for a tape of the 1991 Omega Gold Cup from Bermuda. Hunter built 10 identical 35.5's to race in this match racing championship called the Liberty Cup. Well......I finally found the tape! :) If anyone is interested, I can send them my tape to copy.

That's Great!

What would it take to make a DVD of a tape? Do you think that sending it through the mail or via UPS would get it x-rayed and zapped? I'm surprised that with so many of those tapes that were made - the Seattle dealer had several - that they all seemed to have disappeared, except one, that is.

Like John...

I'd chip in for DVD duplication for a group of us. HOW long does the tape run and it's VHS correct? Keep me posted. E-mail is <marcjudy@bellsouth.net>

Alan, I'd buy a DVD of that and got a buddy with another 35.5 who'd probably take one.

I'd Like One Too

Alan, Is the tape copyrighted or can it be copied? Does the tape show the race or display the boats? If it shows the race, I'd be interested in a DVD or tape copy as well. Willing to contribute to the cost as well. Email is bakerda50@aol.com Dave

Great Race Coverage

Dave - The film shows really Great race coverage. The winds were really strong, say 25kts and more, and the racers really slammed-banged the boats around like you wouldn't believe and with no breakage. The coverage was really high-caliber and anyone who owns a 35 or 35.5 should have a copy just incase they need to show the non-believers what these boats can do. I tried to track down a copy to duplicate but everyone who had one "lost it" by loaning it to someone they couldn't remember and then never got it back. Therefore, my recommendation to Alan based on lessons learned is to NOT loan his tape to anyone - period. I've loaned my share of things over the years and not everything was returned. Just last summer I loaned an out of print book about sailing in Alaska to my dentist, wrote my name on the inside of the cover in pencil, and he says he doesn't remember ever getting it from me!!! That leaves a real sour taste in my mouth (no pun intended). Alan, it's your tape and you can do what you want but don't say I never told you. I'd be willing to pay for a DVD too and if you find someone who can make good copies - burn at a slow speed so it will last or use a good commercial machine, I'd pay extra. Hey guys, it is a really GOOD flick! And it's my personal biased opinion, the best Hunter has ever made. Suggestion about posting emails: to avoid spammers harvesting them try doctoring them up, say, use name"at"internet provider"dot"com, or something like that. The spammers software will automatically pick up the standard syntax. Can I say it one more time? It's a GREAT flick!

Alan - Count me in

Alan - Made a quick call to a local company who does this type of service. I wasn't sure how long the orginal tape was, but his off the cuff estimate was in the neighborhood of $10 or so per DVD. As many have mentioned, I'd be a bit apprehensive about sending the tape out to just anyone to make copies. But I will tell you that I'd have no problem whatsoever sending a check out to you to cover the cost of duplication and legwork. What do the rest of you think? $15 or $20 a pop to cover the legwork and postage? The only thing that might be an issue with a professional firm is copyright. Does the tape have anything on it along those lines? I assume that Hunter probably originally held the copyright, maybe they'd be willing to release the rights as a service to their customers. If you haven't the time or motivation to pursue doing this, and felt you could trust me with the tape, and be more that happy to go through the effort to get these made for those interested. Thanks - T J

John, thanks for the heads up.

My wife works at a local university and some of her grad students are graphic arts majors. They are going to make me DVD copies of this tape in their studio. The added advantage will be that there are some blank spaces where Hunter has edited out some advertising. We will remove these blank edits so that the action flows more continuously. I'll post when this is done.

PS

I checked with Hunter Marine on the issue of copyright of this tape and was told that it(copyright) had expired at 10 years. Tape was made in '92, so we're good to go!

Libert Cup DVD

Alan - Another thought would be to post it online. Depending on the final size, HOW has the ability to attach a video to a post. YouTube might be another alternative, or finally, I've got an FTP server that I'd be happy to throw it up onto. That way people could burn their own and save you the hassle of mailing them all over. DVD Copy for Hunter Marine?

Alan - When I tried getting a copy from Hunter they spent quite a bit of time going through their stuff looking for the tape but came up empty handed. Over the years they have apparently purged a lot of their old marketing items and drawings. The drawings really, really surprised me. It would seem that would be one of the items you'd want to keep. Anyhow, I *think* they have had a little change of heart and are starting to organize and save their old records now. If they are, maybe they'd want a copy for their records? I don't have the names of the two gals I was dealing with handy. I really like the idea of going the graphic arts students route - maybe they have some software that can clean up the snow, too? Do you have a Pay Pal account? That would be an easy way to pay for it. This is Great! In case anyone noticed, I actually logged in this time.

PayPal?

Yes I have a PayPal account for Green Marine Products but I don't know how that could be used for this. I also have a copy of the original line drawings of the 35.5 sail plan. I had taken them to a company to make duplicates but the price was insane due to the large format. I have since gotten a good digital camera so I'll see if I can take a good quality photo of it for addition to the DVD.

No worries guys...

I think they're done. I'll check today and get back. TJ, about posting on line. I believe the total time is close to 90 minutes. That would be a huge file to upload.

Alan, Your last post was about a week and a half ago. Just wondering if you know the status yet as I'd really like one of the copies when available. Best regards, Dave

I checked with...

...the progress. There was some sort of problem with editing and copying but it has been worked out. I was told the DVDs will be available after this weekend.
