i was going west along Lake Ontario's southern shore from Oak Orchard to Olcott, a distance of 22nm. About half way I noticed this Benetau 36 or 38 heading from across the lake straight to nothing along the shoreline. It was a very nice boat. As it approached the shore, which was devoid of any harbors for 12 miles in either direction, we began to worry that perhaps the boat was on AP with no one aboard. Strong storms had just missed us to the north and any boat crossing would have been hit. Then we saw the boat head west, but in short order it turned due east. Then it headed out to us. Now mind you, a very prominent landmark is a power plant visible from 20 miles out and is the only thing within 50 miles that is prominent. The boat was from Ottawa, ON with two older gents aboard and they wanted to know where they were and what harbors were nearby. They knew of the harbor at Ontario on the Lake, but had no idea of direction or distance. Go figure.

I remember riding a jetski out into that lake and losing sight of all landmarks, somehow the song "Edmond Fitzgerald" kept playing in my head, but I do know the powerplant you refer to and puzzled how they could miss it, unless cataracts are really bad, which could explain alot.

It is a Nassua 34 built in 1985 at Presidential Yachts in Tawain. I think Presidential was contracted to build it for an outfit in Houston. It was designed by George Stadel. She is an offshore boat, and I always dreamed of owning one, but into my 60s I have lost that desire to go bigtime offshore. She is a great cruiser, but a lousy racer.

A fine yacht. Nicely done. I really appreciate fine cruisers with classic designs. It's why we own a allied seawind ketch now.

Know it well. We hope to be berthed next to her in the future. There is one for sale now in the current mariner. A little pricy but perhaps it is fully restored.

I was doing yard work at our old house on the Indian River one morning and some tourist pull over (in my yard which immediately endeared them to me) and asked "is that the Atlantic?" This is in Sharpes FL and the river is pretty wide there, 1.5 miles.
I responded with "yes it is and that (pointing at Merritt Island) is f*&^king England. Now get that heap off my lawn".

When I found the compass app on my iphone I went out in the yard and watched the needle swing as I changed directions. Can only imagine what the neighbors thought!

Try it with an aluminum foil cap on your head to see if the metal creates compass deviation! That oughtta get 'em thinking!
