Thanks to all who answered my earlier request for purchasing advice. I had the boat surveyed this weekend and made the purchase. Boat is on the hard in North East, MD. Lots of projects to work on before spring. Worst finding was delamination on the starboard side around the chain plates. Rest of deck is wet but still solid. All fittings need rebedding. Hull has been barrier coated so it's in good shape. Interior needs cleaning and a new floor. Surveyor recommended a dripless shaft coupling, new cutlass bearing and engine alignment. (Engine is 3GM30, 5 years old) Standing rigging is 12 years old and looks good (fresh water in upper bay). Running rigging needs some help, couple halyards are worn. Overall, I'm happy to have a new project and look forwards to getting it down to Hampton, VA. I'm appreciate all the advice of the current owners and cruse the archives all the time. A question, the engine has a Morse single lever control mounted low on the starboard side of the cockpit. I would like it on the Edson pedestal. Any comments on what's involved in moving it. It also is setup to pull back for forward, push forward for reverse which also bothers me! Thanks, Marc

Check with Edson

If you already have an Edson pedestal, you may be able to get the required parts from them. Check their catalog at www.edsonmarine.com See link also.

Morse control?

Are you sure your boat is a 1979? Cannot imagine why the controls would not be on the pedestal. Does the pedestal look like they were there once? The shift lever shaft comes out the back(behind the wheel) and the lever goes to port. Level is neutral and up is reverse on my 1979. Then the fuel throttle is on the starboard side of the pedestal with forward being more fuel. I think Edson has a combo fuel/tranny lever that will fit that pedestal. You are very fortunate to have a newer 3GM30 diesel. Much lighter, smaller and easier to work on than the original 2QM or 3QM. I seal the chainplates by taking off one shroud at a time so as to completely remove the cover plate. Then there is room to really clean out the area before caulking. I use silicone and build it up so that it squeezes out and makes a dam, both around the chainplate and the deck.
