I bought Peggy Halls book

Peggy, that's a great idea but

here's one more thing. My vent hose comes out the side of my holding tank and then goes almost straight up (I think) inside the hull and exits on the starboard side. So I'm guessing that whenever we heel to starboard all that nasty stuff in the tank is sloshing into the vent hose. So now you have me thinking that I should put a new vent opening in the top of the tank (I am pretty sure we have room between the tank and sole) and run the new larger diameter hose to the existing opening, enlarge the existing opening and then add the larger clamshell on the outside. If we do that then we would have to come up with a way to cap off the existing vent hose connection on the side of the tank. What do you think?

Another Thing

...did you remove the mesh in the hull trough-hull? If not, just reach in there with a needle-nose pliers and pull it out. As far as the back-flushing, the action has to push the water up and over a big loop, so don't expect to get a huge flow back into the tank, but it still helps. Where is the odor? If it's outside the boat, that's 'normal' when you flush, or the boat heels or pumping out (except for note re: additives). When pumping out, you will also get some odor from the pump since the shaft isn't sealed as to odors. I have zip odor week to week by using a combo of KO and Odorlos. I know Peggy will and has said that it should only be necessary to use one, but the combo works for me and the expense is well worth the result. If there is odor inside continuously, think hoses. I know all this stuff is covered in her book and you two know what you are doing on the boat. So, please excuse the redundancy and any suggestions of the 'duh' nature, but I thought I'd revisit the points anyway. Rick D.

... you made me laugh, and reminded me of the time one of our club members was hosting a cocktail party on his boat. Unfortunately, the holding tank was full and he had a good size crowd. Well, the tank just pumped right through the vent... into one of the dingies. At least a few gallons of waste greeted the owner when he went to leave... not what you want to find after a few drinks *yks

The whole boat is like that. The P.O. made a 3page instruction manuel to start the engine. It cost me $700 for a diesel mechanic to set things back to the way they ought to be. The freshwater system was replaced in its entirety also. I have schematic and plumbing diagrams for that also. I removed about 100 lbs of fittings from the freshwater system. There way not one hose in the entire system that was longer than 18" before it either went into a checkvalve, ball valve, "T" or gate valve. Tony B

Save your money, forget the book

Use common sense and avoid any part or chemical the has a label that says MARINE. Buy you plumbing parts from Home Depot or Lowes. The entire marine industry (especially WEST marine) is out to complicate simple syetems and take your money. Buying a book from someone in that industry will encourage fools to purchase marine sanitation hose at $8-12/foot instead of PVC Pipe at penny's a foot (and the PVC will last ten times longer)

Captain Grumpy and I always look forward to your comments. You are right, there is not enough clearance. After looking at your picture I remembered. I still think I am going to go with the bigger vent hose, enlarge the existing tank vent opening and the vent thru hull and I will do as you suggest and remove the mesh (or maybe I'll have the Captain do that). We do suspect that the odor is either the hose from the forward head, the vent hose or the connections to the new tank. We found after we installed it last spring that we might have missed a couple of steps. We will fix it before we launch this year. Thanks again! POTL

Bought Peggies book and with some help online saved me a ton of money & time that I didn't have to pay someone else to figure out where the smell was coming from. No sense guessing how to do it right the first time. I hate doing things wrong and then having to redo them. Thanks Peggie.

Did you ever consider that some of the profits from that book keep this forum going? Why don't you register so we can see who you really are and where you are from. I have read Peggy's book and have chatted with her online many times and I am sure she would love to debate any disagreements you have with her theories. Otherwise post you crap somewhere else.
