I told him multiple times not to put TP in the head. HE IS SUCH A HILLBILLY!!! i am not happy with him. he got "sick" in the middle of the nite and blew up the head--and used regular TP. Lots of TP. i cant describe how mad i am. we dont even get along that good, so he will not be invited back. he skipped town while i was at work and went home 3 hours away. He said he "cleaned up the best he could", which i wont even describe the scene. HILLBILLY, actually worse, i like hillbillies. the only evidence i see of trying to "clean up" is a new roll of paper towels. no lysol, no cleaner, NOTHING. The worst part is he obviously doesnt know how to use the system and flooded the bowl all the way to the top. again, i wont describe the contents. i thoroughly explained how to use the system, and how could he miss the big sign i taped to the mirror that says "NO TOILET PAPER IN HEAD"? I cant go sailing with a full bowl. I DONT WANT TO TOUCH HIS CRAP!!!

Any suggestions? I cant use liquid plumber can I? Can i let it sit a while and maybe the block will disolve? use a snake of some sort? The head has been perfect until now. i really dont want to take it apart. I might get hepatitis or something from his dung.

it really couldnt be any worse. he is the scum of the earth in my moms opinion. i didnt meet him til i was 18, so dont give me a hard time about being mean. he is a loser-user deadbeat dad that lives with his mama and NEVER cleans house.

Try a plunger

But plunge DOWN only to blow it through the Jabasco valve. Once you get the waste through, it will work better. Peggie may check in with other advice.

Huh? i dont understand? are you saying to use a plunger? what is the significance of "only to blow it through the jabsco valve"? sounds like there is a possibility of hurting something?

Thanks

It's disgusting

Your attitude that is. Put some gloves and get the wad of paper out.

Sounds like there's more than one hillbilly in the family. Not sure you need to dump your family's dirty laundry on this forum. Just asking how to unclog a toiliet would have been more appropriate.

You can use something to push it through into the holding tank. Or perhaps, with peggy's approval, try pumping out through the deck fitting with the y-valve open to suck the clog into the holding tank. If you use a plunger, put the emphasis on the "push" rather than the "pull" so you don't damage the joker valve.

But may I recommend you get right on this instead of taking time to rant on the forum. Your boat isn't going to clean itself.

Maybe put the pumpout hose on the deck fitting to suck contents while pumping the head?

My relatives came from Ireland at the turn of the last century. They were forced into the hills by religious and ethnic intolerance. They survived, barely, and managed to hang on to some of their pride. One of the ways that they managed, in their poverty and isolation, was by hanging on to their culture and their language. When electricity and the automobile invaded their lives they were once again derided and discriminated against. This time they were ignorant and backwards. These people, my relatives, were hillbillies. Please think of how your use of language and words might hurt others.

Yer givin' a bad name to Hillbillies?
I steel lahk the Beverly Hillbillies, Elly May that is. Texas gold.
If you put some clear vinegar in there and let it settle for a while it MAY help to dissolve the TP. Using a snake or other probing devices may cause unintended problems.
The idea I like best is to use the pump out fitting as the others have suggested. It would be nice if there is one nearby or a floating pump out facility that could come to you.
My best,
Jethro

You have my sympathy

However, whether YOU flush TP or not, if you're gonna make premium "extra strength" tp available to guests--ANY guests!--they're gonna use it, and they're GONNA flush it.

Do NOT use a plunger or a drain opener. If the bowl is still full, a cupful of K.O. left to sit in it for a day may dissolve the clog...unless it's paper towels. If not...well...you can try a snake, but if that doesn't work, you're just gonna have to take the system apart and clean it out. Sorry. But the K.O. will go a long way toward eliminating the odor.

I don't know what "jabasco valve" is...unless he means a joker valve, something all toilets have, not just jabsco.

Pumping out the tank while pumping the toilet wouldn't accomplish a thing.

And as for hillbillies, I come from a LONG line of 'em! Not only do I have relatives who've never come down out of the hills, we're not sure that all of 'em have come down out of the trees yet!

Hillbilly is a term referring to people who dwell in rural, mountainous areas of the United States, primarily Appalachia and the Ozarks, most of whom do not consider the term to be any more of an insult than "Cajun" is insulting to them...just the opposite, in fact...both groups are quite proud of their culture. The most credible theory of the term's origin is that it derives from the linkage of two older Scottish expressions, "hill-folk" and "billie" which was a synonym for "fellow", similar to "guy" or "bloke".The image the poor, ignorant, feuding family with a huge brood of children tending the family moonshine still - didn't really exist until the Great Depression, when many mountaineers left their homes to find work in other areas of the country.

He's a HillBilly..may he used corn husk instead of toilet paper!
Now, do you know the real story of HillBillies? Nope, not goats. It's actually kind of honorable to be one. They were the tough fighting Highlander Irish that fought for King William hence they got the name Billy's Boys. As I heard the story, these tough fighters came to America (well before the potato famine) and lived and boldly fought in the hills of Carolinas and Tennessee. They were the forefathers of Tennessee Volunteers (more hillbillies). So..is that man a HillBilly or just a country Hick?

If your pumpout has the universal adapter on it, maybe it's possible to bring the boat over to the pumpout station, then bring the hose into the head to at least empty the contents from the bowl?

As a boat owner you will learn that having a place to poo on board will require you get acquainted with the toilet and its many functions and malfunctions . You better get over it quick. There's alot more to come and you will be getting some on you !

I think Manny is onto something...I'll just add more...

Here's the ticket if you can't get the pump station hose down into the head. Suck the liquid out with a shop vac then take the shop vac to your pumping station and vac it out.

Good luck. Everyone has a bad experience eventually. I had a small porta potty on my last boat. My Wife and I stayed overnight then had friends over all day on the fourth. Not pretty. I learned a hard lesson about minimal water use when flushing just after #1. Even the 12 gallon tank on my boat now fills up awfully fast.

Put on some elbow length gloves, get a 5 gallon bucket and a small dipper and bail the damn thing out. This isn't rocket science it is just a shitty job that needs to be done.

Re: You have my sympathy

I'm proud of my Arkansas "Hillbillys". I lived in northeast Arkansas for four years. My sister's still there and raised three children, one of whom is still there in Paragould and two others, one in the Ozarks and the other in L.R.

There's some pretty nice sailing to be had there also...check out Lake Ouachita.

Really, it's not so different from what your mom went through with you. Poop is just not a big deal, in the scheme of things. And I always keep gloves on board.

Brobins, I feel your pain. I had the pumpout boat come today, but it could not pump the completely full tank. At 0200 last Saturday I found a paper floating in the bowl. A crewmember spoke up that if there was "only" one floating, there was still 4 or 5 she had flushed thru. 4 or 5 not biodegradeable "medicinal" applicator papers were now apparently clogging the outlet of the tank. I can't take the port off the holding tank because it's full. I'll have to take the boat to a dockside pumpout and try to pump out through the vent, I guess.

Don't try that Ron...it won't work

And it's unlikely that only a few medicinal wipes have clogged the tank discharge....especially if one is still in the bowl. A blocked tank vent is more likely.

If the discharge IS blocked, some water under pressure down the pumpout line should clear it....you may have to do that several times to get the tank completely empty. If that doesn't work, there's a li'l doodad I just heard about for the first time...it's available for about $3 from Home Depot, Lowes etc. Can't recall the name, but it's essentially a balloon that goes down a drain and inflates to clear a clog. Someone at my seminar at the Kadey-Krogen rendezvous just down the road from you in Solomons claims to have successfully used one to unclog a blocked tank discharge.

Good morning Peggy... My post was the short of it. I took the first paper out of the bowl when I first saw it floating. It was stiff like a pad to remove makeup. While using the pumpout boat hose, someone pumped the head, and tank contents came out the 1.25" vent. After the pumpout boat left, I managed to hold the water hose into the deck fitting and some tank contents again came out the vent. I'll go to the dockside pumpout at Port Annapolis where I can take more time. I'll try the deck pumpout first, in hope the papers do not always settle to the bottom. One paper at a time shouldn't clog the discharge fitting in the tank, but 4 or five??? Maybe if I put in water to clear the drain, then pump, and repeat as much as needed I might get the thing pumped out. I thought I might have to try putting the pump hose on the vent thru-hull and in "reverse-flush" style, force fresh water into the deck fitting and pump the tank via the vent line. At least fresh water in the tank will allow me to fish for paper.

Hope you have a good sail with J&J. Can't make dinner today (Sunday), but I offered to shuttle you folks to and from the show tomorrow.

Hooooo Weeee .. Be SURE that the hose clamps are really tight before using that "drain tornado" the little thing that Peggy is talking about.. It can blow the hose off the fittings... it WILL clear the line then !!
Ross has it.. gloves and a mask and get in there and bail it out.. put down plastic to keep stuff out of the bilge. Ya may have to pull the pump off the base to clear the check valve in the bottom of the pump. Stuff will sometimes not turn the corner into the hand pump cylinder and the only way to get it out is to remove the pump and the lower valve. Then there is the joker valve .. lots of toilets have a 90 degree elbow on the joker.. it may prevent stuff from turning that corner too.. That may have to come off to clear it..basically, suspect any place where the flow has to change directions. No fun at all !! After one episode of this, I have learned to instruct about head use whenever anyone non-nautically qualified comes aboard.
Good Luck with it, Brobins
