Has anyone used the Radiolab WaveRV antenna? See the link. Seems like a good solution, eliminates the coax line loss issue. I am looking for any input. Thanks.

A lot cheaper solution

(1) You can use a USB-KEY WiFi and hoist it up higher. That's basically what this thing is but cost 90% less. (2) If you want to be fancy and look impressive, stuff one inside a fiberglass tube or old VHF antenna (which is hollow). I use method one above as I don't surf and sail at the same time ;-) My $0.02.

Here's what I've been using this year

Working real well. gets signals miles away. Am writing this at anchor in Georgetown, Exuma miles from the closest wifi signal. http://www.netgate.com/product_info.php?cPath=26_42&products_id=328 Netgate First season with it. No need to lug the laptop ashore anywhere.

Don't know about that price!

Check this out! I believe it is the same unit for $41. http://www.keenansystems.com/store/catalog/default.php?cPath=2&osCsid=2d126726fea4f620ab38b096b6913b50

I use the Radio Lab RV marinized.......

I use a Mac and the marinized WaveRV. that you listed. Running the NE and mid Atlanitc Coast I can usually 'hit' any non-encrypted open wireless modem from about 1-2 miles offshore. The growing problem is the surge of 'subscription for price' nodes in popular anchorages/ports (in which most formerly open modems, now seem to have all turned their encryption on). Usually near any high density population area someone is bound to not be encrypted. The marinized WaveRV is a good unit; but, do get the self-powered extension cable if you need more length than supplied with antenna .,... to get the antenna as HIGH as possible. ;-)

Works Great

We put one on a neighbors 49' DeFever trawler. He just left Martinique headed south I was on the boat as far as Marathon. We never were in a marina or an anchorage that we could not pick up a signal. As he went further south WiFi spots became further apart but he still gets a signal when others around him have none.

Wi-Fi antenna

I use a NetGear extended range USB antenna (69.99) and a 10' usb extension cord.(16.99). It worked great in most locations (Abaco's, Georgetown etc.) It costs less. I just put it in a plastic baggie and hoist it up the shrouds as high as I can get it. Not quite as effective as the specialized antenna, but it worked great for us.

What about 802.11n?

802.11n is the emerging WiFi protocol. Will this antenna support that??
