Well, I pulled the trigger and we bought the O'Day 25. I think the hull number is 1192. I bought this boat with my brother who also owns a larger sailboat that is currently in Mexico. The O'Day has spent probably the last 10 plus years in fresh water. I live near the ocean, so we will take on the waters of Monterey Bay as our most common area to sail. We plan to keep it on the trailer and just trailer sail long weekends at a time. Its a fixed keel model so that adds some launching challenges.

So now the fun begins. I have some items that are a priorities before we take it out. Probably the most urgent is to replace the plastic through the hull fittings with bronze ones and add some sea cocks to them. We need to build an a-frame as rbone suggested to make stepping the mast easier. The boat seems like it was in very good condition with a solid transome, chain plate bulkhead, and mast stepping area of the deck.

After that .....lots of boat projects. Those include, adding and updating electronics, Adding a better front wheel system to the trailer for better launching, trying to find where the cabin leaks, re-caulk the chainplate and mast step plate area of the deck, try to neutralize some of the musty smell in the cabin, add shore power and a battery charger, rename the boat, needs a good buffing out and wax, improve the braking system on the trailer, .....lots of boat projects.

I am not new to boats, so I know there is ALWAYS boat projects, but I love boating anyways. What will be fun about this boat is learning how to use all the different sails that came with it.

If anyone has suggestions about any of my projects, I am all ears and would love to hear suggestions. For now I only have the old pictures of the boat but will post new ones in the near future. Thanks for all the prior info you guys supplied before we made the purchase.

I recommend the installation of at least one Nicro or similar product with placement so that even when boat might be covered on trailer, it gets sunlight and circulates air. The constant circulation of air alone will dramatically reduce musty smell.

Wash all surfaces inside with mold killer solutions. These tend to have bleaching properties even those not containing bleach so you need to be careful. Include washing bilge and under setees and V berth. Doesn't have to be a serious scrubbing, just a surface mold killing wash.

There products that kill mold in air. Fabreze (sp) the fabric sofener is good. Just take a few sheets of the stuff and hange it around. Leave some hanging when boat not in use. It is very cheap way to get rid of air odors.

Oday 25 N/A
I just bought an O'day 25 this off season as well. I have done quite a bit of web searching on these boats, and this website seems to contain the most and best information. If you want to look at pictures of other people's O25s the sailing texas website has quite a few pictures and there are a 2 O'day owners groups on facebook with plenty of pictures as well. Don Casey has a well reviewed illustrated maintenance and upgrade book that could be helpful as well. Good luck this off season and have fun.

Congrats. I have to say, looking at that trailer I would not want to go more than 5mph around a turn. :D

Also just purchased an O'Day 25, 1983. Currently frozen in a boat yard near the Chesapeake. Please keep me informed of your projects. I've got a few in mind for mine also. That is, after the end of the ice age, when I'll sail it to NY. Ernie

Congratulations on your new boat. My son and I Went through the same process that you are facing. The one thing to remember while you are doing this is to take your time and do it right. Do not cut corners. It will pay off in the long run.
