What's the spookiest thing you've experienced aboard a boat? Strange noises? Tools or parts turning up someplace unexpected? Maybe a wraith or two?

While not every boat is haunted, the wooden ones sure are (jk).

Tell us about your (or others) haunted boat stories.

While anchored out one night before I learned to use a kellet I was awakened because the boat movement was off. I went on deck to see what was going on with my flashlight. I was joined on deck by my wife and my ever curious standard poodle. We were tangled in our anchor rode and sideways to the tidal current. I directed the flashlight toward the oncoming water and saw a large swimming creature approaching our boat. Wife contemplated climbing the mast. My always silent poodle let out the strangest howl I ever heard and then started barking fiercely at the swimming beast. On it came, closer and closer, until it was identifiable as and old half submerged large boat fender covered in seaweed with only one end above water. Looked like a big animal swimming in the current. My dog still looks out for the fender monster and I added a kellet to my anchor line. Best ghost story I have.

I once saw a UFO while on anchor far up in the Apostle Islands. We were sitting on the foredeck watching the stars. Perfectly black sky in a dazzle of the starfield of the milky way. Then a bright red-orange lit shape slightly crossed the horizon and silently headed towards us at impossible speed. Before it got to us, it stopped, and then shot straight up and disappeared in seconds. We sat dumbfounded, and I cursed that I didn't go get my phone to record it, because I had no explanation for what I just saw (and still don't). While I sat there kicking myself, another came, and did the same thing.

They know when you don't have your camera ready. That is when they put on there show. Bring out the camera and nothing but dark sky.
That's the reason there are no good pictures of UFO's.

My cat will suddenly perk up and look at "something" in the room, but there won't be anything there. Looks like he's staring at the wall. He does that home too. Wifey and I joke that he sees spirits.

My parents got a good long look at a UFO from the cockpit of their Alacrity 19. Bahamas, 1968, no camera. Said it was cigar shaped, with multicolored exterior lights. It was close enough my dad was waving his arms and shouting at it.

One spooky thing that happened to me several years ago at night. Full moon, going upwind towards the harbor in a decent breeze we saw a big (like 50' which would be about the biggest boat in the harbor) cabin cruiser with no lights cross our path about 200yds away, very fast, going towards the harbor. Spooky part was we didn't hear it even though it was upwind and when we got in we looked for it and couldn't see any boat that matched what we saw. P

Old thread, but my Amazon gift search uncovered this Paranormal Research Meter. "The K2 meter is a top gear for ghost hunting. "

Perhaps it was the space shuttle or one of SpaceXes California launches. I've seen a few shuttle launches from various points on the east coast, and that is what they look like from a distance.

What's the spookiest thing you've experienced aboard a boat?
I can't think of any ghost stories on the boat, but the spookiest - a.k.a. scariest - event I recall happened long, long ago. I was out partying with a bunch of friends on Otsego Lake in a secluded cove up on the East side of the lake. So, party time ends for me, it's sometime around 3 in the morning and I hop into my Old Town wooden canoe and head towards the Otesaga Hotel - that's on the opposite side of the lake and at the south end. I'll have to cross the entire lake to get there. It's pitch black out, overcast with no moon. I'm paddling along and I hear the sound of a motor boat. Up the lake, heading straight towards me is a pretty good sized motor boat running at what sounded like pretty much full throttle... Hey why not? Nobody is on the lake, right? It is 3 in the morning...

I have no lights, no flashlight, nothing even reflective (like that would matter); as one might say - fully equipped - NOT! So it seems like the boat is coming down the East side of the Lake, so I start paddling like hell to get further away from the East side - but wait, that darned boat is still heading straight at me! Now a fast moving motor boat is really quite fast, especially compared to a canoe being paddled. I can't seem to get out of the way of that boat - and time is running out. It is coming on and there is no question, it's heading straight at me. I've got nowhere to go. I contemplate diving into the water, seeing if I can time it right to dive down below the hull, and hoping I don't get chewed up by the prop. Mind you, physically I'm in no condition for this exertion.... This is the 70's after all and parties were.... well .... were what parties were...

So diving in is decided not such a good idea, and I'm going to take my chances of a direct hit. OK I figure, a direct hit and, well, I'll see if I'm dead or not and if I can swim back to shore if not... Oh hang on, let's see, if that boat does miss me, I'd better get ready for the wake - there's going to be a good one! Boat's still coming on and it's coming straight at me, I'm trying to see if it's actually going to hit me or just miss me either in the front or back - I just can't tell, it's way to much looking like a direct hit at this point... I'm swinging around at least to lessen my side profile. ZOOOMMMM here she comes!!!! I'd best get down and hope for the best! Lower my center of gravity in the canoe at least.

The boat flies by right in front of me, I don't think it missed me by more than 10 feet. And here comes the WAKE! Yea Ha! What a ride! First part of the wake hits, up, down and here's the second part! It's like a roller coaster ride and water is coming in!

WOW, I didn't flip over, I didn't get hit and I'm only wet and man is the heart pumping.... I did have a bailer so I'm able to empty the water out and continue the paddle across the now quiet lake and reflect on every stupid aspect of what I just escaped...

Sorry, not a sailing story - although I did sail that canoe...

Well, it wasn't really spooky but- we were anchored in Matagorda bay, off a sand spit and noticed that the water was glowing. After we were in bed, the boat all of sudden moved, very quickly to one side. Then after a minute, back the other way- quite violently. We rushed on deck to see what was happening. The anchor chain was glowing with phosphorescence , and a pair of dolphins, also leaving glowing wakes, was having a ball taking turns shoving the chain one way, then the other. This went on for several shoves back and forth til they tired of it and swam away
