I just purchased a 2001 Beneteau 40CC with the agreement that intermittent problems with the hydraulic steering would be repaired prior to the sale. A mechanic was called in to repair it and I took possession of the boat. Two weeks after he was there, I found hydraulic fluid in the bilge next to the engine. When I tried to sail her, there was no steering at all. After limping back to the slip, I had the mechanic return. I told him that I thought there must be a leak in the line somewhere. But, it was his opinion that there was an air bubble in the system and he bled the system. After 2 hours, there was hydraulic fluid in the bilge again. Has anyone had this problem with hydraulic steering before?

If it leaks how can it be bled?
This system cannot be bled so long as there is any evidence of fluid loss. Bleeding the air out at that point is a waste of time. Like Ross said, you have a seal that is out and the system will never be able to be bled until this leak is stopped. Regards, Big Joe
