I looking at purchasing a 1997 Hunter 450. I am a little concerned about the Sail Area to Displacement ratio. It is 16.55 and is pretty low. How does the boat perform in light air?

Good Choice

The 450/460 series are not light air flyers, however, the 450 is comparable to most center cockpit boats of equivalent size. They motor very fast. If the boat you are looking at has a full batten main, the light air performance will be better. A folding or feathering prop also helps a lot. Our 460 has both, and we are very pleased with performance in all but the lightest conditions.

Better than I expected

I moved up from a P42 and light air performance of the 450 is better than I expected, substantially better than the 42, IMHO. The boat looks like it would be slow, but it's not.
