Thanks in advance for all the great help from this website! I have a 5411 Universal in my 1982 C-30 (#2356) Recently (1 month) had transmission rebuilt - it got fried while rescuing a 50ft power boat in distress by tankers in El Segundo. This weekend while motoring ouy of channel it was very hard to get into gear - and the tranny case became very hot. I called the mechanic and he said it might be a little tight and to keep running it..a little scary but we did...it APPEARED to be doing okay and the temperature of the case seemed to come down...but when we dropped sail on approach to Emerald Bay several hours later we found we were not making way with auxillary engine at all...we were able to go in reverse..but not forward. After two days rest we tried it again - after putting a little fluid in case - this time we were able to go very slowly forward and reverse. Any ideas? The two guys who did the work are not very reliable.

this may not help

But! next time rescue the women and children and leave the 50 power boat to fend for itself! ;)

Steve "after putting a little fluid in case - this time we were able to go very slowly forward and reverse. Any ideas?" How much was in there to begin with? Did you ever check the level? Have you checked it since? Should be easy, the dip stick's on the top port side of the housing. If you need to know how to read it: don't push (screw) it all the way in; unscrew it all the way, then reinsert it, but do not screw it in; let it sit and remove it and check the level. You may have to put it up against a paper towel to read the level, since new fluid is a very light red and hard to read against the stick. Could be that they simply "forgot" to give you ANY transmission fluid. Wouldn't be the first time a mechanic "finished" his work, but... "The two guys who did the work are not very reliable." Duh! No kiddin' Good luck, Stu
