How did the marina's on the Forked River fair?
Any idea what the storm surge was?

LE,
Try the other sailing website, SN. Couple of threads there talk about the Forked River area.

I just came from Forked River about two hours ago. I hauled at Tall Oaks in Silver Cloud. Boats hauled in the Tall Oaks parking lot didn't even see water around the stands. We came through OK, not a drop of water inside.

Water got up to four feet over the docks there. Water into the parking lot and the shop. More at Silver Cloud and Wilberts than Tall Oaks. Dave and his crew did a great job re-tying boats during the storm and replacing broken lines. As far as I know no serious damage to boats there. For those who know Dave his house at the marina didn't get any water.

I know the State Marina was under water at one point during the storm but I don't know about the boats there.

Driving by Townsends the docks along the street were gone. Just the frames were left.

It looked like the water went right through the Captain's dockside. The building was still standing. No idea how much damage in the kitchen/bar.

Southwinds didn't fare as well. Lots of damage to the docks and they lost two boats off stands in the lot. One good sized boat on a trailer on the condo side floated across the parking lot. Boats that rode it out in the water at Southwinds seemed to be OK. There was water in the offices and in the shop. The beach bar flooded enough to float the boardwalk but it looks pretty much intact.

Some shots of Southwinds

Ward how did Mariner's make out. Have you been able to talk to Rich or get down to check on your boat?

Hi Jim, I don't have Rich's cell and the office phone goes to answering machine. It's a 90 minute drive so I was waiting to hear that the area got power back before going down. Doyle's Pour House reported on FB that power came back on couple hours ago so I may try tomorrow after work.
Glad to hear your boat is OK and dry.

Ward, make sure you have a full tank of gas before heading down. Yesterday the power was still out in most areas near the shore. The WaWa at Rt 70 & Lacey Rd. was closed yesterday without power, and once we hit Rt. 9 the only open stations we saw were the WaWa Rt 9 in Barnegat and the stations along Rt 72 between the Parkway and 9. All had VERY long lines. Everything north of Rt 72 was out yesterday. If Doyles has power again that's a good sign. They were out when we came through yesterday.

LooseEnds, sorry we drove by Ted & Sons going from Silver Cloud to Southwinds but you really can't see much from the street.

Jim,
Talked to Mariner's today. They had 2' of water in the shops but the club house and office were fine. Front docks are damaged, inside docks are OK. Rich is assessing damage to the boats and will call each owner with a report. Couldn't tell me anything more than that.

According to Google Earth the shops are sitting at 7' so that puts the water at 9'. Most of the boat storage area is 7'. With my 2'5" draft and the cradle raising the keel almost a 1', my waterline should be about at about 10'5". Hopefully that's enough.
Of course I don't know what the wind did and apparently there is damage to some boats if they have to assess each boat but I take this as a good sign.

Since it would be almost dark if I drove down after, decided to go down on Saturday.
And I will have a full tank of gas when I go.

Thanks

I heard from someone who stopped into the silver cloud office. I heard they didn't loose any boats at all. I also heard our boat didn't have any damage. I was head into the wind up on sticks stripped bare. I haven't been able to go down yet. There are huge gas station lines for those stations actually open. I might not make it back home.
I know there was water over the docks.
Good luck and stay safe.

Ward, best of luck.

NJSail, if you were blocked up with your canvas stripped off you should be fine. Silver Cloud/Tall Oaks weathered the storm better than most.

A friend of mine was down today checking on his boat. The power is back on along Lacey Rd and the lights are working again at Lacey & Rt 9. He said lines for the gas stations are still long though.

Thanks for the update. I took friday off work to strip her bare and glad i did. She was up on sticks and pointed into the wind (unintentionally). The silver cloud staff was incredible. They worked tirelessly round the clock for many days before and after, and during the storm. They provided us updates on facebook and posted pics to keep us informed. Of course i had several days with no communication.

I feel really bad for people that were wiped out. The damage is mind boggling. Many of the people i know are still without power and it may be another week. News 12 had a slow flying helo travel from seaside down to atlantic city panning back and forth. I stared in disbelief at the extent of the devastation. I also saw all my summer hangouts in bad shape or underwater. Its a cold reality now and i just want to wake up from this nightmare.

Stay safe.

If there is a bright side to all this it's that with the advance notice we had there wasn't the huge loss of life as we saw with Katrina.

Night time temps around freezing the next few days and a nor'easter coming in on Wednesday are making things harder for folks without power and along the shore.

Normal daytime temps this time of year are in the 60's, but the flow off the back side of Sandy is bringing arctic air down from the north.

Lets hope the nor'easter stays out to sea...

Got into Mariner's Marina today. Had to show proof of ownership of a boat at the marina to get past the police road block which was only allowing residents into the area. That whole section of Barnegat still has no power.
At the marina a couple of boats were demasted. One was leaning in it's cradle, probably due to sails flapping in the breeze. Some damage to docks and minor damage to some boats in the water.
Our O'day made out fine. No damage, about 2 gallons of water in bilge. The blue painters tape was still in place. I think it helped to keep water from being blown through the hatch board cracks.
Kind of strange looking across the water at LBI. Looked the same as the week before. Now to tarp the boat for the winter and dream of next year.
