Sea Bouys

Yes these are neato!! I watch them here on Lake Erie as well. During Katrina they went dead. Seemed like the whole system went out. I saw 27 footers in the gulf before they went. Have a friend in Kodiak and look at the sea and wind conditions there. I like the 24 hr log they keep. Since I live 20 miles from the Lake I can see in advance what the conditions are. I always check the bouy before going to the boat. Even though the Lake Erie bouy is 50 mile east towards Huron Oh. It gives me enough info. " Its a good thing " M. Stuart. Hee He.

Katrina

Geeezzz I often wondered how high those hurricane's waves got. In the past I'd watch and it seemed when the bouy got over 35 ft. waves, they shut down or the whole system quit. After I couldn't get on the gulf bouy and it shut down I couldn't get on the L Erie bouy either. HUUMMM ?

I think that's because the NDBC center (presumably where the computers are which host the internet site) were in New Orleans. The whole NDBC site was down for about a week.

Checked the site. Turns out their address is: National Data Buoy Center 1100 Balch Blvd. Stennis Space Center, MS 39529 Close enough that they had some problems, I guess.

Yes that makes sense. Kinda had that in the back of my mind. Boating all my life on Lake Erie,,,,,I just can't imagine 47 foot waves!!!!! How much anchor rode would you need to secure those bouys?? 500 feet? 1000 feet? Seems in my mind they would be sumerged a lot no mater how long the rode would be.
