I am watching CNN and the coverage of Hurricane Katrina. Sailing in Canadian waters is cold and challenging at times but thank God we do not have Katrinas to contend with. Some comments from New Orleans area sailors either now or later would be interesting. I hope you, your families and your boats make it through Katrina to sail again. 1980 33 will stand up to 120+ mph winds while tied to a dock with a 12-15 foot storm surge...Don't expect there to be much left..I prepped for the storm, took the wheel off to bring home with me for memories sake, took a drink of rum and a last look, then walked off without looking back at Reality...it will be a miracle if any of the boats at my marina (South Shore Harbor on the South shore of Lake Pontchartrain) survive...Right now the forcast is 145mph wind and 18 foot surge...the harbor is well protected, but..amazing how you can grieve for a boat

CNN is reporting that the city of New Orleans is located 12' BELOW sea level with a 25' storm surge expected. My question, if the dykes don't hold and the city floods, what will be done with all that water after the storm leaves?

Katrina

My boat is tied up in Eden Isles in Slidell, La. I am currently in Dallas, at my mothers, hiding out. I do not expect much to be left of the boat or my house by tomorrow night. A friend of mine has his boat right around the corner from me. At Oak Harbor marina. Talked to him yesterday and he said they don't expect there to be anything left of the marina or of any boats there. As for the pluses, a good thing to think about at a time like this. We can sail just about 365 a year. No need to pull the boat in the winter. Easy access to the Gulf, the keys and the Carribean. SoI guess everything has it's tradeoffs. Just hope that I still have something to sail and someplace to live tomorrow.
