From the pictures I have seen on the internet it looks like my boat is in a big pile of boats at the Southshore Harbor Marina parking lot (actually its the Bally Casino Parking lot). I'm wondering if anyone out there has had experience with dealing with an insurance company in this kind of situation. I filed a claim with the insurance company (Progressive) but I am wondering how bad they will want to rip me off. Any advice at all will be helpful. Thanks Noah 79 Oday 23

Sit tight

My son-in-law used to work for Progressive, and this is their opportunity to shine. You should be just fine, and I am sorry for your loss.

Agreed upon valve

Yes it says agreed upon valve. But the insurance man just told me the agreed upon valve and its lower than what I paid for the boat. He also said if they total it then they will take possession. So is that the price of everything on the boat such as all the sails, stove, etc. ? Or do I have to list that with my possessions on the boat? Noah

Florida Progressive Claim

Noah, sorry for your loss. Even though Progressive is primarily a "car" insurance company, they treated me very fairly when I filed a claim for damage to my Hunter 26 from Tropical Storm Cindy in Pensacola. They adjusted the claim very quickly and fairly. I had a check in 5 days. You probably are in more of a claims stampede so you'll probably take longer. If its totaled, they'll pay that agreed upon amount. From Hurricane Ivan, many older smaller boats were totaled just from salvage costs or from simple demasting. If it isn't totaled, they COULD pay just partial salvage costs (moving from casino parking lot), so check your policy coverage. They will take the boat unless you WANT to negotiate a deal with them for salvage value. If they total it and you keep it, the title could have a "salvage" notation on it. It may not be insurable thereafter. I hope this helps. BrianW

Flodida Progressive Claim.. Continued

.... one more detail.. If they do NOT total the boat and the damage is less than agreed upon value, they CAN depreciate the value of some items like sails, standing rigging, running rigging, bimini tops, dodgers, electronics and other stuff that has a shorter life expectancy than the boat. BrianW
