I have found a hunter 1984 model , that is currently in a wet slip and currently runs and sails fine according to the owner. it comes with a 4 horse kicker, and is is very workable boat. they are selling it for 4000.00 bucks is this a good deal if the boat is clean. please help me to know, i know small boat. but not big ones. respond to justint@brazoria-county.com also, i found a 27 hunter for sale also in good condition and this other guy only wants 5000.00 for it , is that a good deal. call me at 979-239-8987 thanks justin.

I recently bought a Hunter 26 for four grand under market. I had the same questions you raised. My wife insisted I get a professional survey - cost $350 - but worth every penney as I now have a clean up repair list and am confident in the condition of the boat. I am an old wood boat guy and you just can't judge what is bhind those fiberglass hulls without a knowlegable person using a moisture meter.

25.5, nice boat
I had a 25.5 for a few years. We fixed it up, loved it, sailed it a lot. good small boat with lots of cabin space for its size. We only moved on because we wanted a larger boat but for us the 25.5 was a good boat. We sold it to a friend and still get out on it now and then. Everytime I sail it I am remimded of how much I like it. It is a 1984 and is in great condition. If the one you are looking at is in good shape (survey) then the price sounds very good.

OB size
I would expect that the 4hp outboard is substantially undersized for this boat. My 25.5 has a 9hp inboard. Most other 25.5 seem to have at least a 9.9 hp OB. I would budget some money to look for a larger unit. The original owner may have switched outboards before selling.

A 4hp motor might be OK for lakes just getting into and out of the marina. But if you need to scoot back to the marina or into a sheltered area to avoid fast-building weather, it may not be quite enough. Our 25.5 will hit hull speed in ideal conditions with the throttle openned only a little on our 9.8 4-stroke. But if there's a good chop and we're fighting a strong headwind trying to get back, we need more than the throttle just cracked. IMHO, 8hp ought to be the minimum for a 25.5. The 25.5 is a great boat capable of competitive racing and cruising. Gymnasium-sized cabin with a pop-top for headroom. Good performance to windward. Easy sail handling. Don't worry about rust on the keel, its normal. If it surveys good (and you DO want to get a survey) and the price is reasonable ($5,000 is VERY reasonable if she surveys OK!), it may be the right boat. YMMV.
