Other Catalina 30 Tucson, AZ
Normally, I'm over on the Catalina list but I wanted to tell you guys how much I enjoyed the Hunter sailboat and how impressed I was with the workmanship. I've seen Hunters at boat shows, before I go over to the Catalina exhibit, but never had the opportunity to sail on one. I really wanted to see how your specialized rig would perform. Yesterday, one of your lister, John Richard from Newport Beach, Ca gave me the opprtunity to experience your boats on his Hunter41. For added benefit - to me - his boat has in mast furling and is loose footed and I was especailly interested in how that combination would perform from a sail trim standpoint. His Hunter41 is beautiful and even has electric winches!! You guys sail a nice product. I'd match it up against a Catalina any day. In fact, I'd consider it over the Catalina - I hope my Catalina friends don't hear that I said that!! Our sail yesterday was not a day cruising. We were working on sail trim as John and his crew prepare for the Newport to Ensenada race this weekend. If your interested in what we did yesterday, pop on over to the Sail Trim Forum and check out my piece on the subject.

Welcome to the Dark Side!

Hey Don, Welcome over to the dark side! I used to have a Catalina. Great boat, but when it came to moving up in size, the Hunter turned out to be a better deal. The same size boat is better equipped by the factory and at a lot less money then the Catalina. I'm now on my second Hunter and all my Catalina friends are amazed at what you get for the price.

Simply a good value

Happy to hear you were impressed Don. I just bought an 85' H40. I rented a 1997 Catalina 400 for a day sail in San Francisco Bay in 1999. Loved the boat, but I didn't have $250K to drop on a new sailboat. About 1.5 years ago I came across a used 86' H40 at the local Hunter Dealer (Norton's). I was amazed at how closely it resembled the Cat 400 in floorplan and dimensions, yet due to it's age was far more affordable than a used 400. I would love to get a Cat 400 one day, but for now the old H40 gets me 90% there at 40% of the cost. Simply a good value to me.
