Just wondering how many of you looked at the small Catalinas before buying your 14.6 or 170 and why you went with the Hunter?

I did

feejer - I did. They're not bad boats, I just really liked the look of the H170. So many daysailers have that same old look. I also looked at Precisions too since I already have a P13. Also American makes an inexpensive small boat and delivers. Jerry

Same here

Like Jerry A. I too looked at the Catalina 16.5, the Precision, and American. I made my decision for the same reason he did as well. I think all of the boats in this price range are pretty competitive. It is just a matter of what you feel about what you are buying.

146 vs14.2 Capri

I have a 14.2 Capri which has a tendency to turtle. Am considering a Hunter 146. Will it not have the same problem?

My 146 hasnt flipped yet

LTJohnston...I have not yet even flipped this boat - means I can't comment on whether she will turtle or not once she does flip. The beam on this boat is 6.5' - fairly beamy, which means more stability. I have had the rail buried lots this season, and just the other day, somehow heeled so far over that the benchback must've been just under - when she flattened back out, she scooped water into the cockpit from the side! Point is, even pushed that far over by a shifty gust, this boat flattened back out instead of continuing over (with a sharp push to leeward on the tiller, of course!). I singlehand a lot, and am happy to say that by myself, I don't suppply much ballast - just one other crew member helps her sail flatter. I do plan on foaming the mast at the end of the season, which many 170 owners have done, just to be extra safe. Check the archives on "foaming" - there is lots of discussion, instructions, and test results. Next season I will flip her on purpose, which is always smart to do (shoulda done it in August while in the bathtub-warm, shallow waters of Cape Code Bay!) On a boat this size, you know flipping is inevitable - however, you don't want to turtle and stick the mast.
