hunter 32 vision white rock
hi im new to this site i have owned my 1990 32ft hunter vision for 2 years and i have never reefed the main as there is a problem with how its rigged
there is a stack of sheaves at the foot of the boom that when you try and reef the sheaves tend to want to come out of the slot the sit in
not sure if this makes any sence to anyone but i sure could use some help as theres been a number of times when i should have reefed

thanks

There should be something to hold the slugs above the slot you feed them into when you put the main on. I assume that is where they are coming out. Perhaps that piece has been lost. It would be something like a metal tab in the groove with a knurled nut/bolt through it that you slide up and tighten. If they are coming out elsewhere that shouldn't be possible unless they are very worn and need replacing.

There should already be threaded holes which originally contained a stainless piece which closed the slot, as I recall, on one side of the slot so that the slugs could still go down but not fall out. I would look closely and try to fabricate one from aluminum or brass stock from a hardware. Good luck & reefing.

BTW, the reef lines go through the eyes on the mast. It's important to mark your halyard for the reef positions in such a way that the blocks on the sail DO NOT tension against those eyes. The sail should be tensioned when reefed by the reef lines themselves. It isn't important to have it all the way down on the boom.

Derek:

I am not sure your setup is the same as our HV'36 but this was not the easiest reefing system to figure out. As I remember the blocks inside the boom should be in the aft position when the main is fully deployed. As you pull the reefing line the block is pulled forward as the sail comes down. The reefing line should pull that block forward.

There should be two lines that have knots at the aft end of the boom.

Do you have a manual with drawings? If you do not, I would call Hunter and see if they can provide them for you. Anyone that sells Isomat Spars may also have these drawings for your boom too.

The sheaves in the aft end of the boom are only held in place by friction (no mechanical fastener). I think once you get everything set up properly it will work fine.

The mast has an external track but I cannot remember what keeps the slugs on the track.

I do not know if this will help, but take a look.
