Hunter vision 32 engine probs

I have recently taken ownership of a 1998 Hunter Vision 32 and am desperate for an owners manual.
I'm having a couple of probs with the engine and would like some help.
When I got the boat it had not been used for 6 years!!
I cleaned all diesel filters and checked all the necessaries, then fed diesel from a can to initially start engine. It fired up and ran perfectly !! went back couple of dates later and fired the engine....it started first time and ran on idle for approx 45 mins then cut out. Now it will fire and start every turn of the key but the sec on you let go of the key and let it spring back to "run" position the engine dies immediately.
Can anyone help???
Also I am looking for an owners manual.
Its a beautiful boat and I can't wait to bring it back to its former glory...any advice would be welcomed.

Excuse me reiterating the obvious. First, change both filters again. After that much time, there is likely lots of gunk in the tank. Second, if that does not work, I would tend to tap a fresh source of fuel in bypassing the tank. Third, I would consider checking for any air leaks. Fourth, I would consider the fuel pump. Fifth, I would disregard everything I said and await a better response!

Mike: I would remove the pick up tube in the fuel tank and check for ant blockage. Check all filters and be sure you don't have any air leaks.

The manuals for the boat are limited. Purchase a Yanmar manual.

"Keep it simple" is best when diagnosing, don't read yourself into a frenzy of what ifs. What may have happened between when it was running fine and now. Vibration!, check idle settings, screw may have backed off below minimum idle speed. Air intake plugged up from critter nests or from a rag left by previous owner that got sucked in. Stop cable out of adjustment and reducing fuel flow maybe. Diesels only need air, fuel, and compression to start and run. Something is borderline to start and below limits to run. If you started it from a can and then switched to the tank you introduced air. At idle it can take forever to get an air bubble out. Once you open her up the air bubble flow to the injection pump and air lock sets in.
Get the fuel clean first then work your way to the engine. Take off the tank supply line and drain some fuel into a glass jar. inspect the fuel in daylight for water and foreign matter. Once you get the tank clean flush the line to the filter by draining the clean fuel from the tank into a container till it runs clean, clean and replace the primary filter...... continue flushing the lines toward the engine till you get to the injector pump. If the fuel in the tank test clean from the begining then you don't need to flush and can just bleed the system (starting at the tank and moving toward the injector pump).

Actually it would not be a bad idea to drain the tank (and clean it if possible). If it can be removed you will be better off.

If you have not bled a fuel system, you may want to check with a harbor buddy, they can usually help you. You should purchase some banjo washer to replace the old ones as you bleed the system too.

The majority of diesel engine problems are fuel related. Would suggest you install an inspection hatch on the tank and give it a cleaning. Polish the fuel or just dispose of it and fill with fresh one. Replace all filters once more.
