Hey Gang, I was wondering what the advantages were to bottom painting. We have a new 240 with the white bottom (blue stripe at waterline). Does it need bottom paint for fresh water lake sailing? What happens if it's not painted? Has anyone out there tried the sailboat cover (2 pc.)? The birds are using the boats as their personal toilet and it's getting old quick. Any thoughts?

Day sailing or leaving it in the water?

Jay: It depends if you are leaving it on the trailer or leaving it in the water. If you leave it on the trailer, the choice is yours. If you leave it in the water for extended periods of time, you will probably want to paint it.

Looks like I'm out some $$$

Thanks for the reply! I checked the archive and the previous posts were very informative. Looks like it is an expensive project. Uh-oh!

Depends...

If it stays in the water more than three days or so on a regular basis paint it. If you pull it after every use you'll be okay without.

On its third month in the water

We have the boat in a slip, and plan on keeping it there over the winter. It doesn't get too cold over here, so it can be used for a while.

Better Advice

Jay: Under the circumstances you describe, I would paint. But, you should really get an expert opinion - call or send Hunter an email describing the conditions under which you're keeping the boat. Also, there's a guy called "Crazy Dave" who haunts these pages from time to time - given his (open secret) background you can take his advice to the bank. But get some advice 'for you do damage to your boat. Good luck, Drew.
