Hello friends!
As I said in another thread, I'll post details of water and waste tanks replacement on this site.
I carefully read everything and everywhere about water tanks replacement for HP42 and so far found that only right option for forward tank, will be cutting existing one off and to pieces and replace with new custom made polyethylene one.
The fwd. tank will be a bit smaller, so total water capacity will be about 5 gal. less. The reason for this is, that there is no way to bring original tank inside or out. I measured everything and decided cut 3-1/2"bottom portion of tank, so I changed original Hunter drawings and now the height of tank will be 15-1/2" this allow bring tank inside forward cabin(the door is about 15-3/4 wide).
See modified drawings. The port tank is going to be straight forward, I just told custom manufacturer make it 1/4" smaller in all dimensions to facilitate installation.
I explored all options of where to order these tanks and found that the best price is from Gareth of www.dura-weld.com, I checked TripleM, they were nice but price was much, much higher. So I ordered tanks from DuraWeld. They will be made by the end of February. As soon as I get them, I'll post pictures here.
Waste tank was ordered from Ronco and I already have it.
This is very cold now in NY, so I have to wait till probably end of March to start installation and will be updating this post.
Hope this thread will be helpful for others who own Passage 42.

Hi Zaya,

Thanks for this initial information and drawing; it is very helpful! Can you tell us how it cost for the forward water tank?

Cheers,
Paul

Paul! Total I paid for both tanks is $1860 plus $250 shipping to my location which is Coeymans Landing Marina near Albany, NY. I don't know how much for forward tank only.
Thanks

Hi Zaya, would there be enough clearance if you removed the door and frame from the forward bulkhead? Maybe you tried this already. I cannot imagine that Hunter would have installed the tank before they dropped the deck onto the hull. But then again...

Terry, the price for Ronco waste tank was about the same as on this site $329.95, can't tell exactly I got it 4-5 month ago.

Thanks Zaya. Our original 1991 SS waste tank is reaching the end of its life and will need replacing at some point. Please let us know how it goes. Pics would be great.

My HP42 is 1994 and tanks most likely just fine, but they are 20 years old, so they can start leak at any time. I decided to replace all of them now, simply because I have time to do it before I started cruising and got retired. Better now than later get in the trouble in the middle of nowhere if they began leaking. After I'll cut forward tank into pieces, I'll make some photos to show how good or bad it was inside. Thanks.

Thanks Zaya- great info

I will look forward to your future posts during and after this work- my 1991 H42 will also need a front tank, but - like many- i have been putting it off as it seems like such a huge project.

Zaya,
Any chance you were able to complete your tank replacement?

I'm getting ready to take on the exact same job and was hoping to learn from your experiences, especially with the water tanks.

Thanks in advance,
John

I have a lot of industrial tank experience and was a bit surprised on your water tank selection. I went to your link site to get more info.

I assume they gave you installation instructions but if they didn't I noted this from there site on the PE tanks...

NOTE: Tank installations should have the walls reinforced , by using plywood or foaming the tank in place.
I am trying to be helpful and not "rain on your parade".:)

If your forward tank is lets say... 50% level and you get in high seas on your bow, the impact load is large when the bow falls.

PE tank seams/welds are not known for their strength. So don't overfill them either. The tanks balloons on filling if not reinforced.
Jim..

PS: What are you adding to you stainless steel tanks to make them leak?

PE tank seams/welds are not known for their strength. So don't overfill them either. The tanks balloons on filling if not reinforced.

Marine water and waste tanks from production manufacturers--including Duraweld--are seamless rotomolded tanks, so welds are not an issue. Wall thickness can be, which is why tank mfrs recommend supporting the walls on all sides. However, that's only really necessary for the cheapest off-the-shelf tanks.

What are you adding to you stainless steel tanks to make them leak?

Chlorinated water.

Chlorine is highly corrosive. Even though the amount of chlorine in municipal water is very small, its effects are cumulative....over time--about 20 years--metal tanks--both steel and aluminum--that store chlorinated water will start to leak, typically at a seam or fitting. Many boat owners compound the problem by adding a little bleach to each fill in an effort to prevent water from getting "funky." Salt air is another factor. It all adds up to an average lifespan of metal water tanks of about 20 years. (The average life of a metal waste tank is typically less than 10 years, but that's another subject). Thick walled seamless rotomolded PE tanks will last as long as the boat lasts.

Hello all! I have done all 3 tanks now on our 1991 42 Passage. We have lots of photos on our boats Facebook page. ( S/V Our Way Too! ) I used Dura-weld for the 2 water tanks and he did a great job on them. The waste tank was done almost 5 years ago by Triple-M and it was much more from them. If you need help with a question or about how I did them let me know. I will try and help.

Just finished the installation of the new forward water tank..that completes all3 tanks... getting the old tank not as difficult as putting the new tank in... thought it might be a little above my skill level but it all worked out well:wink3:

How did you get to the port tank? How much do I need to take apart?

Hi, everybody! Sorry, didn't update this thread for a while!
My installations of forward and port water tanks done several month ago. I was going to post some information about work done, but after looking at Dean's installation process, I thought that it's not necessary to post anything, because Dean did a great job and information available on his Facebook page. Honestly I myself was using his pictures and it really helped in the process of taking apart salon furniture to get to the tanks.
Now. I'm in the process of installing waste tank and have few question to someone who did it already. First, what is the length of sanitation hose from after head to tank and same thing for forward head? I want order Shields Poly-X and its really expensive one so I need to know exactly. Second, is the hose from toilet goes directly to tank or through loop? Asking because I may add direct discharge option to my plumbing.
I have a lot of mods done and if interested you can look at some of them at my Facebook page, look for Vadim Shumey. Thanks.

Zara, I also have done the waste tank on our boat! Look back to about 12/2011 and there are photos of the project on our FB page. S/V Our Way Too!
We did not have any loops in the waste lines. I can not tell you how long the hoses are but the best way to run the new line is to get a barbed fitting and connect the new one to the old one and pull it thru. First thing is to put a small screw thru the hose and into the fitting to hold the hoses on without using clamps!! The clamps will grab anything and everything on the way thru!! And with one person pulling and one guiding it will go thru fast!
Any questions feel free to ask!

Did you have to tell Ronco that the waste pump out pipe was going to be at the top of tank? Move waste tanks have the pump out output at the bottom. Have you had any issues with the new hose connections being 90deg as they enter the tank? the originals were on the bottom. Have the tank removed - looking to order the new one.

Also what did you use to paint the area where the tank goes? How did you prep the surface?

New water forward water tank. I have been talking with Ronco about building a new tank. They say they have a number of calls for this tank. I called DURA-WELD but their tanks are a bit pricey. If you are thinking about replacing this tank let me know - if Ronco has enough potential orders the tank from the them would be less. I am trying to scope out the proper dimensions as the original dimensions (noted in this thread) won't fit through the door - I am thinking 17 1/2" high - that would fit would the door molding removed. Would the rest of the original dimensions then work?
