Hunter Legend 41 - Raymarine Linear Drive Autopilot

Hi,

My HL41 has never had an autopilot. How the previous owner managed without one for 15 years is another story.

I have asked a few questions on Facebook and apparently it is possible to put a Raymarine linear drive by location the drive unit in the port side aft compartment accessed underneath via the aft cabin.

Has anyone here done this and if so do you have any pictures of the installation as it would be a big help.

Keoki. I have a Hunter Legend 37. I'm wondering the same question. I'm currently using a Raymarine wheel drive. It'll work for a bit... But then it starts to crap out after about a year. Did you have any luck with this?

I have had some experience with the RM Wheel Pilot.

When you say "Craps Out" not sure what your experiencing. Break down of the Drive Wheel? The electrical motor? the clutch? It has it's weaknesses but for a boat with your displacement, the wheel is designed for moderate sea conditions open water use as long as the boat is balance trimmed. When the sea gets gnarly the wheel pilot wants to go home and hide. That can be when it "Craps Out".

Installing a linear drive (like the RM 200) is more complicated. Not beyond an owner with good DIY skills. Will tak a couple of days once you have all the parts and materials. Keys: Need to locate a solid footing for the linear drive. Need to have room on the shaft to fit the shaft tiller. Be sure to install the rudder reference.

I have installed a Jefa lineair drive in our 2005 H38. Bypassed all Hunter instructions for a Raymarine linear drive. Fixed the Jefa unit high on the bulkhead in the aft cabin on the required level for the rudder connection.

Yes, I solved this with a Raymarine Linear drive. Works a treat. The installation layout is in the Legend 41 owners manual at the back. The key is to use a gaiter. I used one of these:
