Hunter legend 37 . Rudder problem. Almost imperceptible side to side movement. Is there a bushing or bearing that could be causing this.

The Hunter legend indicates it was built in England. Unless someone can identify the issue, the person to talk to would be Al Fooks with this forum store who use to work at Hunter in warranty and parts sales. There cold be a charge

There are bushings or bearings, I'm not sure of the correct term. Typically there are an upper and lower and they do wear over the years. If the movement is almost imperceptible you likely have some time before replacement. But I wouldn't take a boat into open water with any defect in the steering system.
There are other causes of play in the steering - the worst of which is a failed core in the rudder. So when you turn the rudder the post moves more than the frame, foam and glass. Or the hardware that controls rudder movement may need service or replacement.

On my 1997 h40.5 I discovered slight play side to side in 2003. I checked with the local Hunter dealer and also with the factory. They both told me that some individual boats have some play up to 1/8", and some have no play at all. They assured me that as long as I couldn't feel the play in the wheel, it was fine. I asked about wear in the rudder bearings, and I was told that they have a design life of 50 years.
By all means check that the play you detect is due to a bit of slop in the bearings, and then go sailing.
BTW, I check the play every year, and since 2004 the play has not increased.
