Shifting from reverse to forward yesterday when the shifter went limp. It looks like the linkage attached to the shifter pulled from the cable and may be broken. Can one buy this part anywhere or must it be machined or any other solution.

Not enough info???? Which end of the shifter cable are you talking about, binnacle side or transmission? If the cable is broken then you just need to buy a replacement.
Pictures would sure help.

Concur with Alan. First thing to verify is that it is the cable and not the tranny itself. Dont know how old your boat is but if its a Morris shifter, you can get a replacement cable from WM or similar chandlery. Disconnect and snake it down to remove it. Might be a good idea to attach a messenger line for any places you cant get too. Then measure what you removed. Make sure you get tranny and not throttle cable. They, as I "remember" have different attachments although dont quote me on that. Its work but shoudnt be too bad.

I broke my cable shifting into reverse and replaced it from
WM, took 16' as I recall with a lot of bends and turns.
good luck.

you'll most likely have to replace the cable. I got mine from West M for a H 430. Quite a chore, I needed a professional. You can disconnect it from the transmision and go forward and reverfse manually. NOt fun but it works.

Just replaced the Transmission, throttle cables and the drive cable/chain on our Hunter 37 Legend with a Edson pedestal. I broke the transmission cable and decided to replace the throttle and drive chain/cable at the same time. Very very simple but time consuming. Cables through west marine and the information is on the Edson Marine website: www.edsonmarine.com for the drive assembly. Transmission cable is thicker (9/16th I believe and the throttle is 5/16th), I took them to the chandlery to match up. Couple of hints would be to remove the pedestal and lay it down to thread the cable up it, and do not remove the drive wheel attached to the rudder post...rudder falls out if you do...I didn't!! Hardest part was getting the eye bolts into the holes in the drive wheel as there is no room to get your hand under, took me the good part of an hour just to get it in the holes. All is smooooth now.

Find a regular marine store other than WM to purchase these cables. You will probably want a Teleflex/Morse Cable. I would contact Hunter Marine for the length (if they know it).
