Hi there! We have just completed a 2 year face lift on our 1987 Hunter Legend 35. We are looking for a few good sailors out there who would help us resolve the problem with the running rigging that connects the boom to the traveler and to the mast, as well as, explain what is the extra rigging inside the boom for. A nice close up photo or a drawing would help us tremendously. Thanks in advance for replying to this message. Happy sailing!

There may be three or four

lines running through the boom: one is the outhaul, one or two is/are the reefing line(s) and one is the topping lift.

Bill, that was a nice job of laying out the diagrams of the boom. As you may already know, the "shuttle" in the drawing that the factory supplies with the boat is subject to a large amount of friction which translates into an unusually high tension load. Replacing it with a ball bearing one will make a very big difference.

35 rigging

i have a 1988 legend 35 and recently replaced the running rigging. as far as i can tell my boat is in the original setup. the mainsheet attaches to the boom directly above the traveler. the traveler was made by shaefer and has a different rail size than their current design so if you have to replace the car you need to replace the track. the rigging from the cockpit up and through the boom consists of the outhaul, one reef line and topping lift(cleated at the mast). the outhaul is attached to a block inside the boom to add mechanical leverage. at that point it changes over to wire rope to the end of the boom over a sheave and to the outhaul car. the reef line runs without any internal blocks. the reef system is jiffy reefing with reef hooks at the gooseneck. i replaced the outhaul car with one that has two attachment points for the line and sail. the original had one attachement point and had alot of friction. i eliminated the topping lift by installing a garhauer rigid boom vang. i also replaced the sheaves at the back of the boom. i ould like to add a second reef line but haven't had the need for it yet. if you need parts for the isomay boom or mast you can get them from rigrite.com the rigging is very simple. i hope this helps.
