I know this info is out there but just in case... I am getting my sails redone at SailCare and I'm getting the UV Sunbrella placed on it - didn't have it before for some reason. Anyway - I place a call to Hunter and they called right back. The color for the canvas on the boat is Navy Blue. They use St. Augustine Marine Canvas and Upholstery, Becky at 386-462-4975. Fair winds, Bill

Don't do it!!

Don't put the UV cover that attaches to the foot and leech of the sail. It makes the sail incredibly heavier for light air sailing. It is of no benefit what so ever while sailing. I would recommend a sock that can be hoisted after the sail is rolled up. An added benefit to the sock, no matter how hard the wind blows the sail will never unfurl.

For the neighbors

DO PUT ON THE SUNBRELLA! Those covers flog maddly in the breeze and it will drive your neighbors nuts. If your a serious racer you won't have a roller furler, and if your a cruiser you learn to put up with light air. I would think the sock just beats itself to threads and you are better off spending money on the Sunbrella to make you jib long lasting, and if you sail in light air, buy a drifter sail. If been even told by a previous "socker" that it didn't really work that well for UV protection. Take note that this was closer to Fla than NY. Alan-no offense, but Bill is in Fla and will probably have the sail up year around and get a lot more sun than you get in NY. And for what its worth, you can get the Sunbrella in many colors, including white (so it doesn't look like you're wearing anything) and Black (to play pirate for a day).

A few observations....

1. You will see many boats these days using furlers. If you are a "really serious" racer, you can easily get a furler that can either be mounted below deck or the drum easily taken off to use the just the foil alone (like the Furlex 200 on my boat). Yet, in most of the races that I've seen or participated in, most all of the boats had furlers and were using them. 2. It would be hard for me to imagine paying a lot of money for a big headsail and not have UV protection sewn on it. You could, of course, bend a non-UV protected headsail on and off your furler each time you use your boat, but that would seem to defeat one the really positive reasons for having a furler in the first place. While I have standard Sunbrella sewn on my 150 headsail, you can also get lighter and cheaper white Dacron. I don't think that the Sunbrella makes much difference in sail performance in light winds, at least IMHO. I think using the right weight sheets, setting your jib cars in the right place, and trimming the headsail and main correctly, and paying attention to your helming, are far more important. 3. So...unless you are getting ready for the next America's Cup or the Around Alone race, I'd get UV sun protection sewn on your headsail....
