Hunter B&G Rig

I was wondering on the Hunter B&G rig if there is ever a need to replace the rigging if the boat never actually is sailed? Will the rigging deteriorate over time and need replacing just from sitting at the dock year after year? It will get some stress from wind and waves but nothing like actually sailing. I know the materials will creep if under a sustained stress for an extended period. Stress corrosion cracking is also a concern for any threaded fittings.Just trying to save my buddy Pete a few bucks.Dave

Eventually, everything fails

Standing rigging that is too tight is bad, but it's also not good if it's too loose. Shock-loading can occur when the rigging is too loose, and that's not good for the mast or the support wires.Salty air (or even rain) will eventually weaken steel wires. At some point, the standing rigging will no longer be able to sustain a the loads commonly experienced while sailing, even in light winds.I would advise that your friend have a rigging expert or surveyor inspect them. Better safe than sorry, especially when dealing with a potentially life threatening situation, like a mast falling on top of him. :^(~ Happy sails to you ~ _/) ~
