Hunter 54 rebuild update (interior)

It's been a while since I posted up progress on the Hunter but it was a ton of work. Here are some before and after shots in this slidshow.

There are some other shots of the other stuff we fixed as well. Now we have primer on the hull and are wrapping up the glass work. We paint next week. Exterior shots to follow as we finish.

The reason for the different colored, unfinished wood is that the owner wants to stain and finish it himself. It's all teak.

The interior including the new sole was just over 6K. That included the following:

Four new bulkheads.
New settees.
New salon shelving and trim.
New fridge insulation and cover panel.
Five new engine box panels.
New aft berth board.
New aft berth bulkhead.
All new hull liners.
New galley shelving.
New moulding.
New trim.
New sole throughout.
New vanity forward.
New vanity seat aft.
New ledgers for every cabinet.
New bulkhead ledgers.
New tabbing for bulkheads and settee seats.
Varnish and paint throughout.

I would say this is a bargin considering what this boat looked like when you got it! It will be interesting to see how she turns out when done.

Charlie you are under valuing your work. If you are getting more than 80 % of the jobs you bid raise your rates a little. Better to do 10 jobs for 12 than to do 12 jobs for 10.

This one was difficult. The customer doesn't pay T&M, only bid price. I didn't rebid the discovered work high enough and ate some of it. There's a lot more involved in this boat. Re-core of the house, a layer of glass on the decks. Paint, bodywork, bottom paint and deck paint (non-skid). We will make a little bit, just not our normal margin. He does several boats a year so maybe we get some back on the next one. I'm fortunate to have two other full rate gigs going on in parallel. I did raise the rates a bit. Maybe I'll raise the hour counts for the tasks next time instead.

The quality of your work will trump the cost for anybody that can afford to hire this kind of work. I saw a boat name the other day the dink was "the contract" the big boat was "change orders". I have lunched on under bid jobs many times but never lost a customer for it. Usually you can make it up on the next job.
