Hunter 49, etc impeller changing

A friend's Beneteau 43 CC has very similar problem with the same Yanmar engine. We were able to pull the pump cover plate with a small ratcheting 90 degree screwdriver (http://www.harborfreight.com/8-piece-right-angle-screwdriver-92630.html) then using a long 90 degree pliers,(http://www.harborfreight.com/16-inch-long-reach-pliers-set-38598.html) grab the impeller and by tapping the pliers rearward, we got the impeller out.. Not an easy job, and can't be done on a hot engine.
He'd bought the official Yanmar impeller puller for the engine and it did not even come close with the restricted access.
Note that on the new models of the engine, the pump faces forward and is actually accessible.
On the Beneteau 43cc, they don't come close to having the problem we have. The engine on the Beneteau is mounted above floor, whereas on the 49 it is below floor.
That means that the sides are totally inaccessible. Still, your buddy had a nasty time doing this.'
I agree that a right angle ratchet is a good tool, but I have an additional idea. In all spaces where it is virtually impossible to easily access screws, I change them over to socket head cap screws. You can buy stainless ones in any thread & length.
The advantage is that they are Allen key drive. So, the first trick is to use a bit of masking tape to hold the screw onto the Allen key. Now, it will go anywhere you want without dropping it.
Once you start it in the hole, there is nothing easier than an Allen key for positively driving in a screw.

Having a flow switch on the pump intake would instantly protect your engine if the flow stopped, but if one of the impeller blades busted it may not. Can you adjust the pressure settings of the flow switch?
The short answer is yes, you can adjust the pressure. But, it's not a finely calibrated setting like on an actual flow sensor. Therefore, it would be subject to false tripping if you tried to tune it that closely.
Flow sensors work on displacement. The intake blockage sensors work on negative pressure on the output of the sensor. (Referenced to input)

Because they are tractor engines dropped into boats by builders who didn't think it would matter to folks with 49 foot boats, thinking they'd pay to have maintenance done, instead of thinking that skippers would need to do their own maintenance. That's why!

If the engine was on a tractor, the access would be just fine!

Look, there aren't many boats out there that are perfect. But some are much better than others.

Good owners associations are really hepful to avoid having to reinvent the wheel.

This forum is great, too, but I find it unusual to find this issue being brought up for the first time here. It's gotta to have been solved before.

Have you tried a Google search? Really. I got castigated for suggesting this a year ago, but sometimes it's very helpful to expand the search beyond a single forum.

Good luck.
This is not the first time this was posted. Lots of comments prior. The reason I'm bringing this forward is because (I believe) I have a viable solution. I will be posting this soon, assuming it works.

Should we assume the idea fell short of your expectations? or is the test still in planning and test out stages?

Hi
I required another hospital visit, and the doctors told me that I was sidelined for a bit. So, I've hired some mechanics to install my upgrade. I'm meeting with them this Friday AM, and I'm walking them through it. Should be about a week.
I promise that the moment this is proven to work, it's going on the site

Regards to all

Arthur

Oh My Gosh! Did your voice go up 2 octaves after castigation?

I now appreciate my Volvo Penta (I used to envy Yanmar owners). I can sit on my aft berth, open vertical hatch, sing a sea ditty, and change my impeller in about 20.

Can you install a mirror or use a fiber optic camera to help? I have this and it works great to see around and under.

Mirror

Avoid tight spaces... normally

IT WORKS !!!!!!!

Well, it's been a long day. Started at 8 AM, and just finished (6 PM)
I am thoroughly thrilled to report that my impeller changing system works perfectly. Excluding removing the stairs, it takes about 10 minutes.
The first thing I needed to do was actually pull my existing impeller , which I've never done. What a major pain in the rear!!!
It would be impossible to change this in a bouncing seaway. My existing impeller was missing 2 blades, and had more cracks in it. No way I could have made it to the 1000 islands with this.

So, I'm going to document all this up, and post (as I always do)
Once done. Feel free to PM me

Ok, I'm just staying on boat for next 2 nights. Need to be on my PC to do a PDF. I'll do it as soon as I'm back at the house.

Please post ASAP! My impeller needs replacement, waiting for instructions.
Quick question
Did you do the engine access modification I detailed for the 49s some time back? I see that you have a 50AC, but I suspect you have the same floor access issue. Please ensure you look for my post

artboas, I have read your floor modification post. Is it possible that this issue was resolved on the 50? When I open the generator compartment I don't see underfloor blocking access to the engine. I have not yet removed the "cabinet" that surrounds the engine above the floor which would fully reveal whether the modification is needed. Does your boat have a removable stainless steel rod welded to a stainless flat that supports the aft end of the generator hatch?

Mine has that bar.
You would need to remove the case covering the engine to see if the modification is necessary or just feel for it with your fingers. I did the modification and it has been a huge benefit when working on the engine.

Hello there
You need to remove the engine hatch cover, which means ( of course) pulling the stairs.
I am just about finished with the write-up for the 10 minute impeller change. Having some problems getting the photos into the doc
Will likely just publish to the site with a pdf that you can open.
Not sure if I mentioned it, but I had a pro-mechanic on board to help with this, as I needed help with pulling the original impeller. At dock, it took a mechanic almost 2 hours.
The impeller (which was original) was missing 2 vanes. I caught this just in time.

Hello Art
Was wondering if you were able to finish your PDF? I'm very keen to see your modifications for a simpler h49 impeller change. I did make your earlier floor modification for easier engine access and really couldn't believe the difference. I can't imagine what you've come up with for this and would like to see it. Thanks

Hi
The mod works & it's perfect.
Problem is that I've started & stopped my write-up a few times. I'll get it finished, but going to take a few more nights.
I can email you the doc if you wish.
Just pm me, and give me your email address. I'll send it to you that way
