What I don't understand is why Hunter didn't go with the removable floor support right from the initial design. Nice solution.

Not sure

I've certainly let Hunter know about it. Not 100% certain, but might also affect 50 AC.
This was one thing that certainly got overlooked from a maintenance standpoint. Fortunately, the solution costs nothing, and takes 2 hours

Everything from changing your oil filter to impellers is a snap when you do this mod.
Be sure to use big fender washers on the bolts.

My only concern would be if that section was considered structural. Did they have a reason for leaving it there, making it much more difficult to install the engine? If it wasnt structural, why didnt they cut it at the factory? If so, those 4 little screws on each side wont be up to the task.

It's not structural in fact that whole board sits under a engine cover that supports the companionway steps.

The engine cover is to the right of the generator

I know that's why it's so exciting to see this. You have to be a 49 owner to truly appreciate this modification.

You are 100% correct

It's not structural. Just one of those things a builder does that can be improved upon. No big deal...easy fix.

What make, and size of generator is that?

I wasnt thinking vertical structural support, but lateral. Such as bumping a dock, would it transfer loads to the other side. No biggie, just observing.

By the way, I like how they encapsulated the genny, thats gotta be pretty quiet.

Not even close

The 49 weighs 32,000 lbs. it is built like a tank.
The floor adds very little, if nothing structurally to the boat.
The genset I have is a 12kw Fischer Panda, which I just love.
It is super quiet, in part because of the excellent install Hunter did with a water / gas separator. Sitting in the cockpit having dinner, you can't even hear it running. Way over-rated for the boat. You need to run all your airco units etc to ensure you aren't running it with too low a load.

While you dont want to run the genny at low load for long extended periods, as long as it gets a good workout every once in a while it will be fine. In fact gennys that have started using oil from constant running at low load, most often come back after a full load run of 10 to 20 hours.

Very nice boat by the way, I can only imagine how sweet something like that is.

Well the weather is finally warming up and I was able to get to the boat today and make this modification. Already I'm seeing the benefit as I dropped a screwdriver that rolled under the engine.

Thanks Art!!

Easy modification, huge benefit

Here's what motivated me to do it originally.
The coolant drain valve that Yanmar put in fell apart.
With the engine running, all the coolant drained into the engine well, running over the alternator, splashing all over the place. I couldn't imagine how I'd ever clean it up.
So I just stared at the floor which blocked 80% of the engine access, and said, "this is dumb". I actually used another word other than "dumb", more or less describing what exits a cow's "stern". You get the idea.

So I just pulled out a jigsaw, and that was that.
I have told a number of people about this modification, and everybody does it immediately. Glad it worked for you

I've got a ton of really neat 49 upgrades & fixes if you're interested.

I'm always interested in making my boat better. I've already done the aft head fix you recommended. It's amazing how little things can improve tour boating experience.
