I am purchasing a Hunter 460, but the survey shows high moisture readings in the topsides(above waterline) along a majority of the boot stripe. Has anyone else experienced this issue with a hunter 460 or similar boat?

...intuitively & objectively, that's just wrong. I don't have the time to check now, but as I recall, the hull construction is solid to the waterline at least. Anyhow, someone doesn't know how to interpret a meter. There are people on this board who have a better technical knowledge of interpretation of moisture readings; they will provide better responses.

is the boot tape/vinyl....it may be impacting the readings...

You don't say how old this boat is...but I would be very surprised to find moisture there, of all places ...I suggest you look much more deeply in to this...and get a second opinion if needed...

what does the leather/fiber hammer say??

The survery identified about 18% moisture, but didn't believe there was osmosis or delamination at this time. Yes the boat is solid below the waterline and balsa core above the waterline. The broker did some research and believes there may be a water entering the hull from the anchor locker drain causing the moisture in the balsa core of the boot stripe. Another 460 claims to have this issue.

"...along a majority of the boot stripe."

No wonder you are skeptical! Moisture from the chain locker migrating around the boat? It's hard to believe.

the reading is because of where the liner iglues into the hull, getting broken up once in a while due to the bulkhead tabbing

get a new surveyor who knows what they are doing (maybe a new broker also)

my 410 read the same, and hammer sounds also get confused by the tabbing, but there isn't any moisture

I have purchased a different hunter 460 and it also had moisture readings, but not to the same extent. It only had moisture of 15-18% on port and starboard for the first 5 feet of the boat 18 inches above the water line. I thought it was just moisture from the anchor locker drains, but inspection after shipping found a rotten bulkhead at the anchor locker. When it was removed we found that the cavity below the anchor locker is filled with foam and it was saturated with water. My marina had removed the foam and reglassed the anchor locker. I don't expect to see any further issues.

I have a 2003 H 466 and the bottom of the anchor locker appears to be seamless...don't know if the construction changed or there is foam beneath it. On warm days (Washington state warm days) I open the anchor locker to let the rode and chain dry. The drain lets any water out but the rode and chain do get damp.

We have owned "Wings of Gold" since new and enjoyed every minute aboard. They sail wonderfully, turn on a dime, and are very comfortable. Hoping your experience is the same.

Have fun with her.

Mike
