Hunter 420, Passage, or 42? Dimensions?

Hunter 420 Passage Center Cockpit Marina Del Rey
I am confused on the lineage and evolution of my boat. Let me explain and hopefully someone can help me understand...

For the past 9 months I have been the very proud owner and liveaboard of a boat that I know as a
2003 Hunter 420 Passage Center Cockpit.
The problem I have is understanding the differences (or if there are any) when I see the boat called a Hunter 42 instead of 420, and what the Passage designation signifies. For instance, the Manual I have (and the one available on this site) is for the 420, but the Center Cockpit is not distinguished on the manual.

I am particularly confused when I recently looked up sail diimensions. For instance, when I looked up the I, J, P, E measurements online I found the following:

Hunter Passage 42: 55, 16, 48, 15.5
Hunter Passage 420: 47.75, 16.16, 45.5, 19.25
Hunter Passage 42CC: 55, 16, 48, 15.5

I would appreciate any help in understanding these various designations?

Since I also have a Hunter 420 Passage Center Cockpit (2001), l'll take a shot at answering your questions.

If you click on the "Boat Info" tab, you can research all Hunters.
Hunter 420's were built from 1998-2004. They are the CC version of the (aft cockpit) Hunter 410, and have the same hull, rig, engine, etc as the 410.
Hunter 42's were built from 1990 -1998. Although designated as a 42' boat they are 42'6''. They have a different hull, rig, etc from the H-420.
(The "loa" figures shown under "Boat Info - Specifications", for 410 & 420 are questionable).
The "Passage" designation was given to 42's, 420's and 450/6's, and was simply meant to imply that these boats would make excellent cruising/passage making center cockpit sailboats.
Since all Hunter 42's were center cockpit, they had only one sail plan, (which differed from the Hunter 420's).

The Passage designation was given to Hunter's boats of that era with center cockpit designs. The "CC" isn't an official designation but is often added to the model number because they are all center cockpits.

And as Buck explained, the 42 and 420 are completely different boats. Search Google for the 42 and 420 then click images, you'll see the differences right away.

Okay, thanks guys! I'm starting to get it all figured out. There are still some minor inconsistencies I noted. One is the LOA (as you noted) which is listed in this site's specifications section and also the downloadable brochure as 43'5 - the actual manual states it as 40'8 which is the same as the 410, so I am going to surmise that 40'8 is the correct LOA. (I will probably get out and measure as it will be pretty easy to distinguish between nearly 3 feet difference even if I am off a little).

Also, the 410 and 420 owners manuals state fuel capacity as 50 gal, yet the 420 brochure states 60 gallons - After a long 130+ mile trip I recently filled up with 52 gallons and was still reading a few bars on my electric tank indicator, so I am going to have to assume I have a 60 gal tank...

Buck, what is your fuel capacity?

Thanks again for helping clarify. Can't say how much I enjoy this boat!

Like you, I have added more than 50gals to my tank at times, so, I'm reasonably sure that 420's were delivered with 60gal fuel tanks.
Since 410's have a different aft cabin layout, I'm not sure whether their fuel tankage is 50 or 60 gals... Perhaps one of our 410 owners can comment.

The "LOA" issue has come up before. Again some input from 410 owners might be helpful. 41.5' has been the generally accepted LOA for 410's and 420's... 42's are slightly longer boats; ... sharing a common hull with 43's ????

Just for the record- this manual is for the later model 420- not the Passage 42.
OP has a 2003 420, hence the link to the 2003 420 Manual, not the 42.

Hunter 420

Hey Buck, I just purchased a 2003 Hunter 420(CC?) the listing states the boat hull is 41'1" and overall length as 43'5". Is this what you are saying is the correct dimensions? Trying to learn the ins and outs of this boat as it's my first boat over 28ft. I'll probably be on here alot asking questions since there are several things I want to do or replace. Also, my paperwork shows the fuel as a 60 gl tank. Thanks. Mark

Mark,
I'm not sure of the EXACT hull length of 410/420s. The consensus figure seems to be 41'6", but I have never actually measured mine when it's been out of the water.

correct fuel tank gallonage

The only true spot to determine fuel tank gallonage is the tank itself. My 2000 420 Passage documentation listed several different answers. It wasn't until I had the tank itself uncovered and cleaned out (as part of fuel polishing) that I saw the actual marking on the tank.
