P42 auto pilot install

Art,

I have the same type of A/P installed on my P42. Wish I had photos for you, but I'm far from my boat. Just one thing I learned the hard way. If you install like mine, you will have to cut out a portion of the bottom of the plywood wall of the interior part of the lazarette to mount the motor in place. As you likely know, the lazarettes get water inside of them from a number of sources. That water eventually rusted out my first motor ram arm as they are to be kept dry. So I built a little wooden housing around the motor to isolate it from the remainder of the lazarette and keep it dry. I left just enough room to be able to remove and replace the motor without unscrewing that small housing over the motor.

If this makes no sense to you as you assess your install, feel free to email me for a better explanation.

Cheers,
Paul

Thanks Paul. Unfortunately it does make sense it was what I was thinking too. I was hoping I was wrong and someone had a better solution. Nick that phone call is on my list too. Thanks!

Hi Art, not sure whether my first message was posted. So...

Our 1991 P42 came equipped with an Autohelm 7000 course computer, linear drive motor and 6000 head. The system remains strong and reliable after several thousand miles cruising PNW waters. The drive motor is installed in the port side deck level lazarette and is connected to a dedicated rudder post quadrant separate from the steering quadrant.

I can send photos of the installation if you like, but it will be a week or so before I can get to the boat. If so, please let me know what part of the installation you want pictures.

Almost got it completely installed and should have it wrapped up this weekend. I'll post some pictures for future reference. Thanks for the help folks.

Hi Art, nice job. Installation looks almost identical to our original that was installed in 1991, except our rudder sensor is on the port side. I like the idea of a separate tiller arm for the AP motor attachment. Some degree of redundancy.

Where did you mount the course computer and flux gate compass? Our course computer is mounted on a panel beneath the nav station and the compass beneath the aft cabin dressing table port side.

Sorry for the delay. I put the computer on the shelve next to the nav station and the compass under the floor near the shower sump.

So far. It's the shower sump pump so it's rarely on and shouldn't be an issue.
