Hunter 41 AC Getting Under The Headliner?

Hey Folks,

I wanted to run some additional DC wires from the helm to the panel for iPhone /iPad charges and was discouraged when looking at the headliner... How does the headliner come off and go back on?

Remember they are all just a little different sometimes?
Plus why do you need to run any wiring under your headliner just to get power to helm? Do you not already have 12v power at the helm you could tap into? Mine does...
Is it just 12v power you need or data capability too?
Does it need to go from nav then to helm?
BTW.... I have had to deal with some situations were I have had to get access above my vinyl headliner a few times. I have found my bug screen spline-ing tool to come in handy a few times for the vinyl head liner. Another trick is to pop the trim ring around the overhead lights. Opening some of it up to get access is not the problem so much as it is putting it back....Just be very careful not to damage head liner when putting it back. If you are very careful and lucky no one will know that you messed with it.

Mystique, I got under my headliner a couple of years back. Though it was nerve raking it is not as bad as it seems. First, try not to remove any more than is absolutely necessary. Start from a corner and use a small pliers or something to pull the edge of the material out. It will come pretty easy once you get it started. To get it back in I took a 3" paint scraper dulled it in the end and rounded off the corners. I used this to push it back into the retainer. The retainer is very tight so you will have to put a bit of pressure on it. Just work it back in towards the corner. I will post a picture of the tool I made when I get back home. Good luck!

I'm not sure tapping into the helm electronics is a good idea and no they didn't leave me a messenger or unused connection.
It's just for a couple of USB chargers / like a cigarette adapter.
It guess I could tap into the overhead light above the bunk....

Yeah - I would love to see pics of your efforts..... Not thrilled about the liner back there, what if the steering jammed or something and you had to access quickly. You would think it would be just a panel with speed clips rather than a bunch of drama....

Here is the picture of the tool that I fabricated to reinstall the liner material. I guess it was 4" rather than 3". Also I forgot to mention it has to be "stiff". The tool Hunter sells for this job is stupid expensive.

My extra power outlets at helm are not tapped into the helm electronics... It is a separate run to a breaker at the nav-desk 12v panel... Labeled accessories.

Good to know... especially since I will be installing a clutch for the vang I've had for a couple of years and just scored a ST60 wind for an excellent price as a repeater above the companionway, so will be definitely doing this project this spring. I'll post results on how it goes.... :)

Yeah - the 356 and 376 have a low squaty helm. My buddy has the 376 berthed next to me. The 41 has the ocean series vertical helm and no accessories.

I modified the same 3" scraper and put a layer of electrical tape along the leading edge just as a precaution. As you said, once you get the hang of it, it's not as hard as you imagined...take your time! Your instructions are good. I had to install an extra clutch for the boom vang on the starboard side of my 2009 36. Cheers!
