Anybody know what the difference is between a regular Hunter 40 and a Hunter Legend 40?

...at the top of the home page. The 40.5 is slightly larger and heavier. They are different boats tho, not just a model change. Rick D.

If you're talking about '84-'90

(for the H40) they are one and the same. The most plausible explanation I've heard is that during this time and into the 90's there was a sailboat manufacturer in England that had rights to the 'Hunter' name so Luhr's Hunter covered themselves by badging their models as Hunter Legends since they were being imported there. It sounds reasonable but I can't make any claim to veracity. The factory literature I have (God bless the original owner) all list my '85 as a Hunter Legend. I think the Legend part just gets dropped sometimes. Rick's right, the 40.5 is a completely different boat that went into production after Hunter stopped producing the 40. Nice boat though!

Im confused.... I just got a Hunter 40

Ok , now I am confused. I have a 90 hunter 40 legend, or so the registation says that, anyway, I am looking throught the orignal paperwork and I see that it is a 40.5. I also verified with hunter throught the hull number HUN402 (40.2 being the legnth) they say 40.5.. Well just so happens that I need a strut for my drive shaft, well I orderd the 40.5 one and it was the wrong cast number so I got the hunter 40 legend. Hum now what boat do I really have? Anyone know? Thanks....

Aft cabin

How is the bed arranged in the aft cabin, fore - aft or athwart ship? Do you have a walk through swim platform? Athwart and walk through are 40.5's. Fore - aft and soild transom are 40's. What is your hull #? My 40 Legend is a 1990 and the hull number is HUN40285H990 so if yours is a Legend it would be around that #. HUN is the builder,40 is the model, 285 is the Hull number (total number of that model built to date), H990 is the year it was built. Hope this helps. Vinny

Hawaiian translation

Blackknight13, Do you know anyone that could help with with a hawaiian language translation. I want to name my boat Kala Kai, which a couple of sources tell me means Princess of the Sea, but other sources translate Kala to sun, money, or even fish.... any help would be appreciated....

The 35 came before the 35.5

('86-'88 then '89-'95) and according to the specs page your 37 was produced '86-'89. Also, the Legend 40 began production in '84 and ran until '90 in various iterations. Somebody should do a family tree.

Well Sailortom, your right about the living in Hawaii, but as for parts its a killer when you are in the yards and awaiting the wrong part.. @ weeks @ 80 bucks a day for the wrong strut.. I got it fixed now but this is why I am trying to clairfy exactly what I have... Vinny the aft cabin in fore-aft, no swim platform.. From what you say I have the 40 legend... My Hull# is HUN40287H990. Thanks to all for all the help... Guyh you can email me at larry.cummins@navy.mil for the translation...

Hull #

That makes it a H40 built in August of 89 and a 1990 Model year. Two boats after ours, a true sister ship. You should consider the large aft holding tank that we had built. 19 gal over the 11 gal original. Mine will be installed this winter. Good luck with your boat.

I also have a problem with my aft holding tank, It leaks.. Yuk... Problem is that you have to tear the port side cabinets out, looks like a huge job... Is that so or is it pretty easy..

in denial

which would not be a bad boat name in itself, but I refuse to accept that translation, however accurate it may be and will rely on other sources, however inaccurate they may be, as their translations better suit my tastes... one source: My guess is that it means "Freedom on the sea", a fine name for a sailboat. But that's just from picking my way through Pukui's Hawaiian Dictionary which gives this definition of "kala": nvi: To loosen, untie, free, release, remove. unburden, announce, absolve, let go, acquit, take off, undo, to proclaim, forgive, pardon, excuse, to substitute for, counter sorcery, proclamation, public crier, announcer, prayer to free one from evil, to practice counter sorcery .... as well as some other meanings. Another source says Kala means Sun A few other srouces say that Kala is the Hawaiian female name for 'Sarah', which in Hebrew means 'Lady or Princess' Therefore, I hereby decree that Kala Kai translated from Hawaiian Hebrew translates to 'Sunny Freedom Princess of the Sea' that's my story & I'm stickin' to it cheers! s/v Kala Kai (Sunny Freedom Princess of the Sea)
