Voids or delamination of the rudder - a fault of the rudder manufacturer, not Hunter or this model.

Worn rudder bearing.

A 40.5 is a close second to to the greatest boat we ever had.

The 40.5 is one of the best they built, IMHO. Be sure to check out the boat reviews on this site: Boat Info -> 40.5 -> Owner reviews. There should be many (dozens?) for this model.

Great boat. You may want to check the fuel tank if it hasn't been replaced. Can't really inspect very well unless it is out but the .009 inch original tank is subject to some pitting on the bottom. New tanks by the original tank manufacturer are available and they now make them from .0125 inch aluminum. Mine was "weeping" with a constant faint odor of diesel fuel. When I pulled the tank there were some areas that were like "wet cardboard" in the bottom of the tank. Others have had had to replace the fuel tank as well as the waste tank.

We love this sailboat. "Charges to windward" as our salesman told us. Very comfortable, easily handled by two. Like many other boats, the original holding tank was aluminum. Replace it with plastic. The mainsail is a bear to hoist with the high aspect rig and a large roach sail. An electric halyard winch and a low-friction sail track (like Strong Track) solves this problem. Like Phil sez, look at the reviews on this site.

I believe this model had a stern scoop hatch cover that opened directly to the boat's bilge. Less than 2' above the WL. Never understood why Hunter would do that. I would want that glassed tight. Nice sailing boat.

No such hatch cover Gunni. You must be thinking of another.
Terrific boat. Had mine for 16 years. I have a room full of trophies. I would not invest in a bow thruster. This boat is very maneuverable in both forward and reverse. Once you become familiar with it, you will be amazed how well you can place her in a slip, along a dock or on a mooring.
