Our 40.5 came with a verticle windlass mounted sideways (horizontally) in the chain locker. It works well, except you have to tail the chain. This is due to the chain only making about a 1/4 turn around the windlass if left to its own devices. Question: Has anyone with a 40.5 worked out a better solution? Thanks, Tim

I'll let ya know this weekend

I plan on trying to not use my windlass this weekend. Instead of cleating the rode at the bow, I'm going to run it back to the cockpit, around a winch and then cleat it. That way when I want to retrieve it, I can start the motor and go forward and pull in the rode as I go forward. If this works, it should work better then a windlass, especially in emergencies....unless of course of the motor doesn't start :) In that case, I like having the windlass as a backup :) Note: you need some way to make sure the rode rolls over the bow, otherwise it will not work. In my case, I have an anchor roller for that.

Wrong Chain

I'm willing to bet a bottle of good wine you have the wrong chain for the gypsy so it isn't meshing. Mine works like a champ, falling off into the locker without a problem. Self-tending. Check the manual, it gives the correct type and size of chain. Good luck. PS: i am heading to the boat this weekend and then off to Cat Harbor for three weeks. I'll try to remember to check it when I get to the boat and post it before I go. Rick D.

chain

I had the same problem. The issue for me was that I have 125' of chain and 200' of line. The chain needed to fall to the bottom of the locker for the windless to work right. I moved the line and everything worked fine. Rick, I'll be over in Cherry Cove for the weekend. Work gets in the way of having fun. Hear you are moving to Long Beach. How is Marla going to race with you if you move??!?!?!

She will race...

She will race if she ever stays in town long enough. Every time I call to say "hi" she seems to be gone on another trip. I'll have to stop by and say hi sometime as well. I have my boat in Redondo Beach, but live in Long Beach. And I'll have to see how you did the holding tank. I'll be looking at doing that as well down the road.

Karl: SoCal Hunter Rendezvous?

...are you going? We will be there. If so, will see you there. Otherwise, we can catch up when we move the boat to LB Downtown. Rick D.

Maybe...

We might be. I was planning on heading over that weekend, but not for the Rendezvous. We were thinking of going over just for the weekend
