My Volvo Penta Tachometer has decided to stop working!
I called Volvo Penta and they gave me the part #836467 which I am told has been replaced by #840520 but I am still not able to find one.

My question is there an inexpensive universal tacho 12-24v that will work with the Volvo Penta 50HP engine MD1122l. My Hunter is a 1996 legend 40.5 and the Volvo Penta tacho says VDO.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Our tach stopped working as well a few years ago, Unfortunately it wasn't the actual analog instrument that went bad, it was the actual Tack Pick-up on the Flywheel. When investigating, I found out pick-up had completely eroded on the threads and had fell out and the wires had fallen off. Now to get that baby back in, we almost have to do a motor job and try to rethread the motor.. Fortunately I bought the last pick-up in the states at the time, or so I was told.. Good Luck

I was under the impression that the sensor wire comes off the back of the Alternator not the flywheel? am I correct? It is a 1996 Hunter with the MD1122L 50HP Volvo Penta engine.

I had my original tach give in a few years back and installed a VDO Vision Series 333-163 tachometer. It actually fit perfectly into the hole occupied by the first tach.

The beauty of these tachs is that they will adapt to any output whether it be your alternator or flywheel magnetic pickup.

They're so versatile they also read heart monitors, stock quotations, and your horoscope :Liar:.
