I just purchased an 85 mosel 40 and gave a few questions. I would like to purchase an oil filter i could use a part number for a common afternarket one
Also the motor 4jhe hasnt been started in 3 years. I want to try to move the crankshsft and curious which way the engine rotates looking at it from the front pulley.
Any suggestions on what if anything i should worry about when cranking it over?
Im going to use fresh fuel and bypass the fuel tank and use a portable tank as well as a 5 gal bucket of water.

Not an expert on that model but usually, Yanmars rotate clockwise when looking at the front pulley.. No real problem turning it backwards.. remember to pull the fuel stop so that there is no possibility of it firing when ya turn it.. almost any lube ya squirt in the intake can fire on compression.. be careful.... Good luck

Our 1991 4JH2-TE accepts a NAPA Proselect 21334 oil filter, which is pretty common for that size engine. As far as rotation goes, activating the starter motor will tell you the rotation, but ours is clockwise, I think. Per the manufacturer specs; "Direction of rotation[crankshaft] Counterclockwise viewed from flywheel side".

Depending upon the boat's exposure to weather these past three years can give you some indication as to what you might encounter. Water in the fuel, clogged fuel filter, corroded injectors, frozen pistons, etc. Minimum would be to change the oil (Delo 400), fuel and oil filter. She might just start right up.

Hiya. I've got the same boat, and I have the Yanmar 4JHE mechanic's manual (At least, I'm pretty sure that is without going home and checking) I may be able to give you lots of info.

The Yanmar filter# is 119802-55800 which I've found all the various parts shops can easily look up, but almost none have them (or compatible ones) in stock. WICS# is, i believe, #33399. Everyone will happily order 'em for you tho' and have 'em next day.

Also - the fuel injector was nicely gunked up with biodiesel after sitting for 2 years.
