Hunter 380 rear divider next to steering post

I had a survey and found that at the inside rear behind the steering column is a board about 1 x 5 inch that tapers down to about 1/2 inch. from being wet and 20 years old the board needs to be replaced but is this anything other than a divider between the two rear lockers? The surveyor called it steering support but it does not attached to the steering column where it could support it. Let me know if you have experienced this. Many thanks, Bill Small, Hunter 380, Wind Elephant

Can you post photo(s)? I had a 2004 Hunter 386 and never noticed this board.

Hi, thanks for you help. i never even noticed this before the survey. My message said it was not connected to the steering shaft but it is. i am still convinced it is not more than a divider between the port and starboard sections. Thanks, Bill

My recommendation is to have the boat yard or your boat fiberglass contractor assess the damage and provide you a cost estimate. Sound like you own the boat. If you are buying it then you can decide if you want a repair allowance from the seller.

A similar board exists on my new to me this month 2003 386. The surveyor indicated it has moisture in the wood, and could be wrapped in an additional layer of glass to reinforce. It’s on my to do list. Yours looks a bit worse. I’m not an engineer, but I’d guess it provides lateral support to the rudder post tube. If the plywood is completely delaminated and rotten, I’d cut it out, replace with new plywood, and fiberglass tab it in and cover it.

It looks like a thin dam, to force water down a drain, where the wires[red/green] are run.

Past plugging filled area with gunk/water. Thin gel coat cracked, exposing wood.
The wall does not look thick enough to be structural.
