Hunter 380 muffler

We have worn a crack in our OEM Centek muffler on our 2001 Hunter 380. The muffler is located under the aft bed and was sitting on the fiberglass hull. Over the years slight vibration has worn the fiberglass. I’ve contacted Centek and spoken to their sales and engineering staff and they can’t find any records, drawings, or documentation regarding this Hunter part, even though they were the OEM for these mufflers. They are asking me to send it to them so they can reverse engineer it so they can build me a replacement. (Sounds expensive). Does any one have any other solutions ie. access to salvage, or perhaps a bolt in replacement , possibly from another manufacturer. This muffler appears to have been repaired once before so I hope I’m not the only one who has had this issue. Centek says it would take several months to reverse engineer, and build up a new one, I don’t want to be down that long. Attached are a couple of photos of the problem child.

Looks like Hunter really went cheap after the 1999 models. My muffler for a Yanmar 2GM20F is approximately 2-3 times the length of yours with the same dia. and a solid looking white FG body. Also nicely supported to avoid chafing. The last thing on the boat of any interest to me so unfortunately, no pictures.

Mufflers are not specific to any one engine and will only vary by size to handle increased exhaust volume.

Not for a standard Yanmar. I think they saw you coming. Small mufflers are available off the shelf.

The inlet and outlet tubes are 2 inch. Both are angled slightly, the inlet (foreword), is angled downward about 10 degrees. The outlet (aft) is angled upward about 10 degrees. These angles accommodate the angle of the deck below the bed. When I sent photos to Centek, the engineer I spoke to was familiar with the angles but said they need me to send the muffler to them so they can figure out the baffle arrangement.
Thanks for the link, but I don’t think any of those are compatible, given the inlet and outlet oddities. Plus I didn’t see any of them with the 2 inch inlet and outlet rated for a 40hp Yanmar 3jh3e.

One doesn't fabricate a custom muffler. That is why these are sold :

Accommodates angles up to 20 deg.

Put a little work into it and you'd be surprised what's available out there.

Different model boat, but must be time for an inspection. Our 1991 boat has an unknown brand to me fiberglass muffler that appears to be okay. Unable to see the underside where it rests on the hull in very tight quarters with no sign of an issue.

It probably can be patched and reinforced with some fiberglass cloth and epoxy.. A local fiberglass shop could probably do it in a few days.. or you could..

That is exactly what we did. Local fiberglass team re glassed the entire exterior. In preparation they found an old, horrible repair attempt. It crumbled as the sanded during prep. That was where it was leaking. It’s easy to tell when it’s been leaking a long time, you can see in the photos the rust line from under the muffler foreword, and the rusty bolts. Obvious signs.

Are those bolts for the strut? If so I'd be concerned about them and the strut failing.

Your old muffler looks exactly like the Primex muffler I had and replaced on my old 1980 H30. There are a number of web vendors that still sell various sizes, so Google "Primex Marine Muffler" for more information

Properly repaired it is no more risky than a brand new muffler

The biggest risk is an uninspected muffler. I check mine annually or more often. When did you thoroughly inspect yours last?
