So the latch on the head door jammed. I took all the screws out but the little "L" shaped lock mechanism will not come out. Before I take the grinder to it has Anyone ever taken one of these apart ? Has anyone found a replacement latch for reasonable money ? I know they have them here in the store for $200 but like so many other boat things it sure seams like a $39 part. Thanks guys

I have taken two apart and replaced them. The L piece may need assistance from a hammer, but it does come out. The replacement IS pricey, but locks are that way. HinterOwners.com has them. I believe Defender does as well.

thanks Stuart. I did give it a few taps with the hammer as hard as I dared. The doors are so thin in that spot I was afraid to break the door. I'll take my skirt off and give it whack next time I'm down there. And I guess I'll buck up and pay the piper for a latch.

A Benny friend got locked in the head when the lock failed to open. On the boat alone, but waited for a passer-by to come aboard to unlock from the outside. She could have taken the lock off the door, for the want of a phillips screwdriver. After that, I kept a screwdriver on the head shelf.

Now that's funny on one hand and scary on the other. Out sailing by yourself you'd be breaking the door down. On our boat a phillips would not do the trick. A flat blade to jamb there and pry the door open would get you out. I think I'll leave one in there.

since the 38 has two doors to the head it’s unlikely that you would need a screwdriver for emergency exit.

I had a similar problem with the rear berth door lock sticking on my 2007 H-36 but took it
apart lubed it but because door is left open 24/7 and doesn’t get used so can get stuck again.
$$$$ crazy way over priced try taking a part and put lub keep from sticking.

From what I can see when I took the cover off the latch housing is broken. I tried lubing it but no luck then I tried to remove it and exchange it with a latch from one of the other doors that is not used as much but I couldn't get either latch out. That's what prompted this email since I couldn't get either latch apart and didn't want to break the good one. Even though I knew it was a long shot I removed another door to exchange with the head door as that is the more important one to have latch but the hinges were not in exact same spot and I wasn't about to start down that road. I did some looking and every boat door latch I see is $100 and up so I'm just going to bite the bullet. I was hoping someone might have had a source for a cheaper one.

What year Hunter 38 do you have and my 2007 H-36 latch was not too much trouble taking apart, where are you located.

Rock Hall Md. 2005. I have the store here looking for the latch for me. I may wait till I get the new one to see how it's put together or I'll just drill the old one out till it falls apart
