I am interested in buying a Hunter 37 Legend, probably around '87-'89 vintage. There are quite a lot out there but I'd be interested in hearing from owners or previous owners regarding any potential problems to look out for when inspecting the boat. Also, on a more general topic, what's considered the life of a diesel engine in a sailboat. Obviously this can vary depending on how well they are looked after but when you see an engine with, say, 1500 hrs or so, how much life might be left in it?

most diesels, with decent care should easily go 4,000 hours...and at 40-80 hrs a year that is a long time.

Survey for sure

the only thing I really hated in looking at many legends last year were the limited head room in the aft cabin and mods made by the previous owner....

one was put two 4D batteries in the aft cabin floor, which basically eliminated all the floor space....one was like threading a jungle jim to board with all the davits, solar panel brackets, and dodger/bimini frames, fuel can carriers...

best of luck

Some diesels will go 10,000 hrs., I would not be worried with 1500 hrs. 37 and 37.5 Legends are great boats and sail very well. Steering cables and quadrants are exposed and area around them gets dirty and can leak into aft cabin unless kept clean and cable pass-through properly caulked, chain locker at bow is usually not well sealed to under surface of deck, some leak at base of mast and into the compression post because of blocked drain holes in mast step and/or internal cables don't have drip loop in them. Mostly minor problems. Go in and read owners reviews to get ideas of other short-commings, but in general they are great boats.

According to one fellow that was a certified Yanmar mechanic, he claimed a useful life of 10,000-12,000 hrs. I must assume that they rate them based on doing scheduled maintenance and running the at the prescribed RPM.

Clean fuel, clean oil and run them at 85% of the rated max rpm. That is what they say to do.
