Hunter 37 vs. 37.5

I have been doing some research on the 37.5 (I thought) and have become a bit confused. I visited our beloved site and have looked through The Boats spec sheets many many times. After recently looking at a 37.5 (clearly marked on the hull) I came back to HOW to compare it with owner's reviews and, of course, the 37. Here's the problem: The boat I looked at was clearly the floorplan currently listed under 37 on HOW but the boat was clearly marked 37.5 The specs say the 37 was not manufactured after 89, the boat I looked at was a '93 which enforces the spec sheet for the 37.5 that says it was manufactured between '90 and '96. When I checked the owners directory for 37, only one owner claimed manufacture in '90. When I checked the owner directory for 37.5, I found several manufactured before 1990 as far back as 1987. So, first question: Are the pictures swapped? (Are the pictures/plans for the 37 here on HOW | The Boats actually for the 37.5 and vice-versa?) If not, did Hunter actually build the two at the same time and market them together???? Or did they offer one with a modification to the plan similar to the other? Last possibility: The Hunter I looked at has the wrong paint/sticker job on it and/or the owner does not know the actual year of the boat. (Owner is not in HOW directory.) Any explanations? I will be revisiting the vessel to obtain HID to hopefully clear some of this up.

Check Hull Number

Simply check the hull number embossed in the fiberglass located on the starboard stern or sometimes on the starboard side next to stern. This will give you both the model and year of manufacture.

The 37

There's the older Hunter 37 cutter. I have a 1988 LEGEND 37. There's also a younger LEGEND 37.5 The two LEGENDs are similar layout, although the latter ones have the aft bunk mounted athwart-ship. The earlier one is on the centerline. The LEGEND 37 pictures and layout are on the money. Hope that helps:) Email me thru HOW if you have other questions

More info

Having reviewed the pics, I beleive they are correct. Actually the L37 is 37'6" (same hull as the 37.5). Some owners may be confused because, I beleive, in the early life of this site that the L37 was not listed and those owners registered as L37.5 owners. But this is some of the obvious attributes that I can tell you: H37C (Cutter) 1978-1986. Wine glass stern. L37 1986-1989. I own a 1988. Centerline aft bed. One hull port (aft, stbd - pics show none). Television & VCR. Walkthru transom w/ladder only. L37.5 1990 - 1996. Athwartship aft bed. Multiple hull ports (see pic). Walkthru transom w/integral steps. Also, as stated before. Check the HIN. Good Luck.

If you are considering a 37, as we are, look at all the layouts - 37, 37.5, 376, 380. We prefer the starboard side galley layout, so we are choosing the 380. Note the 380 layout and 376 layout are very similar - starboard side galley. We are choosing new to push its useful life as far out into our future as possible.

Galley Issues

Has anybody had a problem with the galley stove being directly next to a bulkhead? Has heat from stove or oven discolored, disformed, or actually burnt the bulkhead? Was looking at the 376 and 380 as suggested and stove is against bulkhead on both models. I personnally prefer the icebox next to the bulkhead and the stove in the middle of the galley. Comments?

Galley stove

On our '93 37.5 there is stainless heat shield that covers the part of the bulkhead immediately adjacent to the stove. We've not seen any problems with burning or drying due to heat. Jim "Prospect"

Heat Shield

Pickup a stainless steel heat shield and mount it on the bulkhead next to the stove. That will solve the problem of discoloration and or burning of the wood. Mark Johnson
