Running backstays are discussed there as David points out. On my own H37C I rarely move them. They go to the toerail about 18 inches aft of the aft-most shroud. Since I rarely have the staysail raised(too lazy) I really do not need the extra support. But the boat has a lot less weather helm with the staysail up and everything trimmed. In 15-18 knots of wind yesterday we were broad reaching at 7 knots withOUT the staysail. Yes Tom, that was confirmed by the GPS.
