Hunter 37 rudder repair

a grounding damaged our rudder, cracked along the top and a one half inch wide crack down the trailing edge for about sixteen inches. the leading edge and the bottom of rudder have no cracks. Water has gotten inside and there seems to be a void for about eight to ten inches.

I will have professionals repair but if anyone has had experience with same, I would appreciate thoughts of items to watch out for.

No experience but suggest you check the archives, there has been plenty posted on this topic over the years.

This is a good time to check the whole steering system including bearings, quadrant and cables so that once the job is done you can look forward to 10 + years trouble free.

I grounded my 35 Legend a couple of years ago. Bent the rudder shaft :eek: Contacted Foss Foam ( Williston, Fl) they make all the rudders for Hunter. He made me a new one in 3 days. Money well spent. NewRudders.com » Current Specials Good luck

Once you have salt water intrusion you will probably have corrosion at the welds too.

If you decide to have it repaired be sure to open it up for inspection.

do any of you know the pounds of torque to put on the keel bolts of a 4 foot draft Hunter 37? Thanks

as a finale to my problems and a thank you to all of you who educated me on this rudder topic. It turns out that the steel frame in the rudder was stainless. The foam that originally
went into the rudder was not complete, leaving voids throughout. We have been across the gulf several times, never knowing that portions of the rudder were hollow. best wishes to all.. Be safe.
